Turtle Brownies

by Robin on June 16, 2009

It’s Tasty Tuesday over at Balancing Beauty and Bedlam and Tempt my Tummy Tuesday over at Blessed with Grace, lastly you can head over to Tuesdays at the Table at All the Small Stuff where you’ll find loads of great recipes…but for now…right here…I found the most amazing recipe for Turtle Brownies Peeps! They have two layers of brownies with a layer of melted caramel candies, chocolate chips and pecan pieces in between!

I made these at 7:30 in the morning and I could not stop dipping my spoon into the melted caramel and evaporated milk…

The recipe was easy but spreading the caramel on top of the bottom layer of brownies took some time. It was a slow process that required me to have more patience and less nibbling! Just take your time and gently spread the caramel over the brownie layer. It WILL work…it just takes time…

Turtle Brownies

1 (14 ounce)package of individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped

1/3 cup evaporated milk

1 Chocolate cake mix

3/4 cup butter, melted

1/3 cup evaporated milk

1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

1 cup chopped pecans

Preheat oven to 350*

*In heavy saucepan combine caramels and 1/3 cup of evaporated milk. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly until smooth…set aside.

*Grease a 9×13 inch pan

*In large bowl, stir together the cake mix, melted butter and 1/3 cup ofevaporated milk by hand until dough holds together. Press half of the dough into the prepared pan, reserving the rest.  This takes some time and patience…

*Bake for 10 minutes . Remove from oven and sprinkle the chocolate chips over the crust, smooth the caramel mixture evenly over the chips…this takes time…just carefully push the caramel to edges…slooooowly. Then sprinkle the pecans over the caramel.

*Crumble the remaining dough over the caramel layer and return to the oven…crumble may not be the best word…it’s not quite dry enough to crumble so I kinda made marble size little balls and spread them around…don’t fret, it’s soooo worth it.

*Bake an additional 15-18 minutes …Cool in fridge to set the caramel before cutting into bars….YUMALICIOUS!!!!!!!

I so wish I liked nuts [only like peanuts], but I suppose I save myself a lot of calories avoiding deserts with them in it :) This looks so good, though, that I think it’d be worth the effort to eat around them!
