Last week on Outdoor Wednesday Susan put up some great pictures of Stone Mountain Park. I got so excited looking at them that The Husband and I went to Stone Mountain on Saturday! I grew up five minutes away from Stone Mountain and went there all the time. My first job was at the Game Ranch which used to be in Stone Mountain Park…Visit Susan today for some beeeautiful photos of the great outdoors!
On Saturday we took my dad and Brenda to lunch for Father’s Day at the Stone Mountain Inn.. Daddy still lives five minutes from the park. Oh my gosh Peeps…fried chicken~mac and cheese~mashed potatoes~mile high biscuits~pecan pie!!! A Southern Comfort meal for sure~ This is a picture of the Inn…so charming.
After that HUGE lunch, The Husband and I grabbed our camera and went for a walk…the mountain has countless walking trails and a five mile treck around the base of the mountain…not to mention 3 miles to the top!
The park was full of church groups cooking out and this group with a man sketching! How fun!
While walking we saw the funniest thing…a man pushing a freezer…I mean a waist high freezer…he stopped us and gave us popsicles!
I was so excited about my blue popsicle that I didn’t get a picture of the guy with the portable freezer! (He was coming from one of the big cook outs!)
We went to the Carillon … here’s the path …
It’s right on the lake…
These are the pipes…the carillon is kinda like a big organ…it was donated to the park by Coca -Cola after being exhibited in the World’s Fair in 1964!!!
Someone still plays it three times a day…it’s beautiful music , you can hear it for miles.
A view across the lake…that’s the Scarlett O’Hara. I went to a prom on that little river boat~(Or one quite like it)
There were lots of families out and about having fun in the sun! It was triple digit…heat index!
Pretty, fluffy and pink!
At the Grist Mill Kids were playing in the water, which I’m pretty sure is against the rules! But it looked like so much fun!
This is the Plantation…they give tours…if you like history you’d so enjoy this.
Fun little shop near the plantation…they had bottled coke and lots of southern cookbooks!
Thank you Susan for hosting Outdoor Wednesdays and inspiring me to visit Stone Mountain Park…it’s fun looking at your hometown like a tourist every once in a while! Happy Wednesday Peeps~

I lived in Athens, GA for several years during my childhood. I have such fond memories of Georgia and especially Stone Mountain. Thank you for the walk down memory lane. Hopefully, I can take the hubs there someday!

What a fun adventure! Rick would drool to be able to tour the plantation, and actually I think I would love it too, but Rick the big history guy. It all looks like a fun place to explore and its so neat that you have such fond memories of it!

Wow, what a great park! It looks like you had a wonderful trip. Those pipes are amazing. You sure showed us alot of beautiful scenery and to think you only lived 5 mins away when growing up. It is different to see everyday things to us, through someone else’s eyes.

I can remember when the only thing at the bottom of the mountain was a small popcorn stand and the carving was not completed.

So pretty! My FIL has tons of pics of Grist Mill that he loves to show me again and again. It must be really beautiful in person. I have never seen the place where the kids were playing (surprising though it may be). We had someone drive by and give up popsicles today, too, but first we had to give them LOTS of dollars.

We keep saying we need to go to Stone Mountain one Saturday night for a laser show. Love the pictures and it inspired me. Atlanta has some great things to do and we stay out here in the burbs. Beautiful blog-I’m going to have to make a squash casserole today now!

From spring thru fall we used to spend every Friday or Saturday evening at
Stone Mountain. We lived in Atlanta for the first 8 years of our marriage. This was during the late ’80′s- early 90′s. Orginally we were attracted by the laser light show. Then after we had our two boys it was the train that was the main attraction. I have artist pictures hanging in my upstairs hallway of the covered bridge leading to the little island were we always cooked out!
