Thoughts on home…
I was over at my daughter Bethany’s house this weekend and she showed me the new addition to their office. She and Darren found these old maps at an antique store and had them framed. I was falling in mad love with them and she said the best thing…
“I don’t buy anything anymore unless I really love it.”
Music to my ears I tell ya.
The temptation when you settle into a new house or redecorate a room is to just go out and get things to fill the spaces. Filling the house with prearranged chachkees from a decorating show room is one way to decorate a home. And I’ve seen some of those homes that I admire. But I prefer to go slow and bring home only those things that touch me in one way or another. Only those things I love.
Those things don’t have to be traditional. For instance I have several old stained glass windows on my walls where I would normally hang a picture.

Those things don’t have to be expensive. I am the worlds worst about falling in love with something super cheap and being determined to use it in the house. Here’s some kind of cabinet door I found for 5 bucks. The pattern in the metal and the scrumptious color stole my heart. I had no idea what I’d do with it but now I use it for a magnet board next to my phone in the kitchen.

Those things I fall in love with don’t even have to make sense at the time. If I love something chances are really good I’ll find a place to use it. This old milk glass lamp was out of place when I found it. I have nothing in my house that’s lavender like the globe, but I loved it and now it adds soft glow to the guest room.

How about you, what’s one of your favorite things you’ve decorated with? What’s your decorating style?

It depends. Sometimes I get so caught up in waiting for the perfect thing to come along that I get stuck and leave a room or part of it empty for a long time. On those occasions I may buy something to fill the space. But the older I get the less I desire to buy things that I don’t have a stronger connection with.

I love to decorate my kitchen with cobalt blue glass. I don’t just buy anything though. The piece has to really “hit” me which is why I only have a few pieces. I find them at thrift stores, yard sales and E-bay.

Or, I’ll be shopping and think, This looks just like Robin. Or my mother. Especially in antique stores.
I have a tiny door right now on my front porch. It’s on the side of the house. It’s very old and too short to use as a real door. But I love it. Still trying to decide how to use it.
I am always struggling with passing up things that I really love. Sometimes it is the price (so silly, GW IS my dept. store) , sometimes it is that I was looking for one thing but found this other jewel that doesn’t necessarily fit my “style”. I have to remind myself that a home is a personal thing. You can’t let others-even bloggers you admire-dictate what your home should look like.

An elderly lady passed away on the first floor of my building and she was an artist. Lots of her things were left in the garage for trash. I was so happy when I returned from my trip and found this large destressed picture frame, white and actually thought of you! I have it in my bedroom and don’t know what I am going to do with it, but I am not going to throw it away! It’s wonderful! I was so glad to be able to save it. When I figure out how to put pictures on the computer and send them to you I will take a picture of this frame. It is so you! Love you and happy birthday week! Aunt Toni
A little late on the commenting for this one, but it’s such a good reminder as we are still trying to get our home decorated. I’ve been tempted so many times to just get stuff to fill the space, but am waiting (it’s hard though) until we find things we truly love. My favorite right now is the wall decor in our kitchen that my granddaddy and both brothers worked on for Matthan. Love it because they each had a part in it. http://tinyurl.com/nekeyl
