A little pre-planning for Christmas…yes, I’m serious!

by Robin on October 1, 2009

Okay Peeps, hang on…don’t click off because of my post title. Bear with me …just a minute. I know I’m hopelessly addicted to All Things October through December, I know it’s probably an actual physiological condition, but hear me out.

As you get your Autumn nesting all finished in the weeks ahead, take a moment to think about your upcoming decorations for Christmas. Okay, eye rolling is fine, go ahead. But here’s the thing…at some point you’re going to find yourself in Hobby Lobby, Garden Ridge or Macy’s and drift into the Christmas decorations. You’ll lock your eyes on something shinny that gives you little joy tickles and on a delightful whim you’re going to buy it.  I’ve done this year after year.

And then when it’s time to decorate, I find all the little things I bought in advance weren’t what I needed. I’d forgotten about the things I wanted to add to my decorations. I just don’t remember well from one year to the next.

A few years ago I started going through my last years photos and see if all the rooms and decorations are the way I want them. Last year I actually made notes in my Day-Timer about things I want to change.

I’m changing the dinning  room’s color scheme to this: (you know how I adore this tealish color. I want to add muted champagne and icy silver to the teal)

For years the dinning room was decorated in this deep red.

but since I’m changing it, I needed several new things .

Monday I spent the day, okay, not the day but the entire morning, at Hobby Lobby and brain stormed about  my dinning room. I was looking for something for the  table…I thought of these…

Or these cutie pies…

Then I decided on a fun thing that I’m gonna make…I can’t wait to show you!

I took some more pictures with my phone of some stockings.  I’m thinking of changing my stockings this year, my den is kinda rustic.  I liked these…

And these were just super cheap at Old Time Pottery…

img00131-20090928-1410Since it’s a budget year, I may just  sew some new stockings.  We’ll see!

Anyhoo, I just wanted to encourage you to pour some coffee and sit with your digital or ACTUAL photos from last Christmas and look with a non-frazzled eye at your rooms. Make a list of anything you may want to add or change and keep that list in your purse in case you’re out and something catches your eye.

Okay…there you have it, a little of my insanity. But really,  the closer the holiday’s get, the better I feel and the more I enjoy  myself  if I’ve planned out the details and decking the halls is a big honkin detail!

I’ve been planning some fun things for my little blog-home from now until New Years. Here are a few:

* Crafts…some for you and a few that would be fun to do with your little ones…

* Plans for our Annual Pumpkin Carving Party that may give you an idea or two

* Food testing for Thanksgiving! I so love this!

* Let’s Do Dessert Cooking Day

* Decorating ideas from some of my Peeps and the fruits of my loom!

Lots of opportunities in the coming months to set the stage for more important things. But if you’re frazzled you won’t be able to relax and enjoy your friends and family, so a little pre-planning never hurts!

Love to you Peeps and thank you for hanging in here with me!

I understand you so well. I was in September and already puting a counter to Christmas in my blog! I like that antecipation feeling. It’s not just Christmas, it’s all the preparations and thinking about it time.
The problem here is that is a bit hot still!

Your dining room is going to be so pretty in those colors…….You might want to think about some mercury glass too, for in there! I am not ready to think about Christmas yet, although I agree that planning ahead is vedy, vedy good……

You’re finally wearing on me. This morning during our porch party, I asked how soon we could put up the white lights around the house. For me, that’s progress. Did you say you might “sew your own stockings?” Oh my. Never will I try that one.

I awoke to gray and gloom this morning… and I can’t separate snow and Christmas, so I am blissfully now going to embrace Halloween and Autumn. But I won’t deny you your joy at the thought of Christmas… I love watching it bubble inside of you and spill over in excitement (in blogland anyway) and eventually I’ll be there and happy to join in your funfest…

I think we share a brain. I feel exactly the same way about the holidays. Can’t wait to see your upcoming features.
I’m on a blogging break, but I am updating my food blogsite 3 times each week-(because the posts are done)- I have a fall decor/food post up now. I am only checking out a few blogs each day as I am not spending much time on the computer. Yours is one of them.

In just two short months, my trees will be up. Us planners know that Christmas (planning) starts the minute the leaves turn. ;O)

Wonderful ideas! I can never remember what I buy from year to year, so looking at my pics would help tremendously!

Love those snowmen and stockings…makes me want to start thinking about Christmas already!

Hi Robin,
Love this post! That is a great idea to get out the Christmas pictures from last year for planning. I am going to make a point of going around and taking photos of this year’s decorations so I will be ready for next year. We’ve got a new dining room set this summer so I am really looking forward to decking those halls, er walls… er, room. Oh, you know what I mean.

I’m with you. I’m all about pre-planning & I even have “My Little Holiday Book” on my blog. It is my constant companion from mid-Sept. thru New Years. I love your new ideas, too.
