Reba the once feral cat…

by Robin on October 18, 2009

If there was ever a metamorphosis…this is it! Reba! She’s gone from crazy wild cat to….well, take a look!

It’s Reba day! Remember Reba is our once feral cat that I’ve written about HERE! (The Husband named her Reba after the old TV show…she’s a survivor!) A quick recap…

God has  used Reba over and over again to teach me things. Check out older Reba Stories here! It’s been a year this November since we found Reba in the top of a tree in our back yard, chased there by a big dog. She wouldn’t let us near her. We left our garage door cracked all winter last year and to this day we don’t park in there! We started feeding her and when the weather turned warm The Husband sat with Reba every afternoon when he got home from work. It took him 3 months but finally she let him pet her.

One day she disappeared and came back with 2 tiny black kittens in tow. We kept the little family in the garage until the kittens were weaned and then trapped poor Reba in a pet carrier and took her to be “fixed”. That story was powerful in my life, I wrote about it here.

We had to keep Reba inside the garage for 2  weeks after her surgery and here is the first place she went when I opened the door and let her out…the gutter.

We fixed up a room in the basement for her…she wasn’t sure about it…

We put in a cat door but she won’t go in and out if the door is closed…soooo, we have it taped open. She has eventually learned to like her room…but one morning this is what I found when I came downstairs…

dsc_4462

The Husband had let Reba in the house. The upstairs house, the place where people live! This once feral cat that wouldn’t let a person anywhere near her was  in The Husband’s lap!

They played and she seemed to like the couch!

dsc_4813

She comes up here a lot these days. We have to lock the pups up in the bedroom. They don’t know what to do with a cat except scream bloody murder. You should hear them Peeps it sounds like there are 75 dogs in the midst of a conniption fit! But still Reba comes to the door and Meeeeows loudly. Turns out she loves the actual house.

Please look at her relaxing…claws still out. Sometimes I look  all cut up after she’s through “making biscuts” on me.

She plays with the pups toys when she comes up…

And walks around on the coffee table and changes the channel with the remote. I took this in the Summer…notice she still had her collar, shortly after, she managed to get rid of the collar!

Look how far she’s come Peeps…this is last Sunday morning. She was reading the paper with me!

Reba isn’t a feral cat anymore. Where once she wouldn’t come near us, now all she wants is in the house and in our laps! I feel really bad since The Husband has asthma and the pups have to be locked away when she’s inside. Still we let her up almost every day. I adore this cat.  She has my heart forever.

I’m linking to Susan’s blog, Between Naps on the Porch where you’ll find lots o’ links of before and afters! Check them out Peeps, I’m always so inspired with the projects being done out in blog-land! Today, Reba’s my project…she’s turned out to be pretty amazing I think!

TTFN Peeps…happy Monday!

Robin, this is the best story EVER , and what a beautiful kitty Reba is! I loved reading this. You should submit this to a pet rescue site so that people can see what a little love can do for a beautiful animal like that. I absolutely loved your story. Bravo!

XO,

Sheila :-)

How sweet. We used to have a siamese cat we found on the side of the road. It took her forever to warm up to us. I just love cats. Thanks for making me smile.

This is truly a metamorphosis! I am going back and read the stories you linked back to. I loved it and I am not even a “cat person”. :) I am sure you have both benefitted from this relationship!

What a special story, Robin. I was a volunteer in a spay-neuter clinic for an animal rescue organization. Feral cats usually can’t be domesticated, so I wonder if Reba had some human contact when she was a kitten. You wouldn’t believe how many people get a kitten, decide not to keep it, and just put it outside to fend for itself. She’s a beautiful Siamese.

I would never have dreamed of this for Reba! The power of love and patience. Beautifully written story about all of you. I love that Anita used the word redemption… Reba’s redemption has a great sound to it. How are The Husband’s allergies? Perhaps they have diminished as well over time and repeated exposure?

Blessings to you all!

I LOVE cats! I have 3 and want another kitten. And bless you so much for loving little Reba! As it says on the top of my blog:
“Until one has loved an animal, part of their soul remains unawakened.” And you have doggies, too! I bet your home is filled with lots of love.

Found your blog through another friend’s blog…happened to click on the Reba story. WOW! Truly touching! I have 2 cats that I rescued and I am highly allergic…(just became allergic after I had my baby, was not when I rescued them) so I get shots every week…But God knows every day is worth it! All 30 sneezes first thing in morning make my husband laugh so hard. Speaking of him…your name sounds familiar and I think you actually go to gym he works at…Joe, If I am right WHAT A SMALL WORLD… I think I was directed to your page by God. You are an Angel to rescue Reba! And your husband is a trooper!!!
