Holiday Table on a Budget!

by Robin on November 18, 2009

Some of you know my take on decorating for Christmas…my mom always had our house completely decorated by Thanksgiving week. Her thought was that she’d be able to better enjoy the holidays from Thanksgiving Day through New Year’s Day, if her house were ready. So that’s what I do! With that in mind…let’s have a look at my small dinning room…I’m almost done decorating my it, so I thought I’d show you what I’ve done so far!

I had the dinning room done in deep red in years past.

http://robinrane.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/dsc01369.jpg

But this year it’s hues of tranquil teal,  icy silver and splashes of pink…

It’s a budget year so I couldn’t spend a bunch of money…I painted the glass hurricanes with an easy lacy technique and blogged it HERE.

christmas-close-up

See all the darker teal glittery ornaments? I got those at Walmart for almost nothing. I planned on spray painting them to soften the color, but fell in love with them when I started decorating. I did spray a matte finish over them so they would quit shedding glitter! It worked like a charm!

christmas-dinning

The Ornament centerpiece is just 3 cake plates with my Gramma’s super old pink ornaments and some newer tealish ones thrown in! No matter what colors I use to decorate I always pull out these pink Christmas balls. They are old, old, old and remind me of Sweet Gramma. (She loved pink!)

christmas-table

The snowflake on top is a tiny tree topper that started out white until I got hold of it…me and spray my spray paint! I loves me some spray paint!

These birds started out gold then they were blue and now…

The napkin rings are ornaments, only a dollar, at Walmart, tied on with some pretty ribbon~

The chargers started out shiny gold until I used bronze and silver spray paint to tone them down…

I  love changing things up a bit and the challenge not to spend a lot was actually kinda fun!

I LOVE these colors together and I love your dining room!
Mine is normally traditional and pretty much the same for Christmas. I changed it up for thanksgiving this year so maybe I’ll be inspired for Christmas.
I love teal this year!
And as soon as Thanksgiving dinner is over, my tablescape will be transformed into a Christmas one!

You use spray paint the way I use hairspray! You really transformed so many things! I am very impressed. Your dining room is lovely. I am taken with the teal and pink. Beautiful together! I also noticed that you layered a tablecloth and a second one diag. and a runner. That looks fantastic.
I will be back for a visit. So creative, and well done even on a budget. Kudos!
Happy and blessed Thanksgiving.

i just love the colors you’ve chosen, robin!!! what a wonderful idea of sealing the glittery ornaments from walmart with a matte spray paint – i saw them at walmart the other day, but my hands were covered in glitter after handling a few of them! i’m thinking now i will have to give them another try.

thanks for being an such an inspiration!

LOVE LOVE LOVE the pink and teal. Especially the Pink! I am a Pink girl! I do a small silver aluminum tree (passed down from my Nanny) in my master bath. I have the small old pink balls on it. And I love it! I also do a small pastel baby pink tree in my master bedroom with all white and silver ornaments.
I just love anything old and anything pink!

I enjoy all of your blog. You do such a good job. Thanks for sharing.
Have a blessed day!

LOVE your table. Everything is so very elegant! You did a fantastic job on making over items to work with a new ‘theme’. A creative touch to it all. I, too, am planning to change some holiday decor up this year. I did NOT however think about spray painting some of my ‘old’ stuff to match the new idea. So THANKS for the inspiration.

Just found your blog today. Really liked the hurricanes…I think I may try that! I’m considering changing my colors to the blue/teal look a bit this year as well. Thanks for the inspiration.

On a side note, I do have to point something out that is meant purely to help rather than hurt…

The goblets go on the right side of the plate – at the top of the knife. The spoon should be to the right of the knife. If it’s meant for dessert, there should be a second spoon at the top of the plate (as you have it). Also, the salad fork goes on the outside of the fork section if you are eating salad before the rest of the meal, on the inside if you’re eating it after the main dish.

Reply

Robin November 19, 2009 at 7:22 pm

Kristen, I realized my goblets were wrong but only after the picture was edited… thx for the other suggestion on how it should be set! I’ll remember next time :)

Hi!
That sure is a pretty table you’ve got going there! What an interesting color combo that totally puts a new spin on the traditional red and green – I really like how fresh and fun it is. And I love the vintage pink glass ornaments. The old ones are the best, don’t you think? Great use of the cake stands, I’ll steal that idea from you if you don’t mind!
I’d love it if you’d stop by for a visit sometime.
