Black Friday~I’m in it for the snacks and antlers

by Robin on November 25, 2009

It’s Black Friday. Every year, I head to the mall at the rear-crack of dawn on this, the holiday of the masses…My 3 girls, who are grown and out of the house and do this by choice, join me at five am and off we go.

We will be wearing scarfs.  No matter what the temperature in The ATL, we wear scarves. Fortunately, it’s supposed to be chill-i-licious on Friday so the scarves may actually be necessary.  Let’s recap…

We’ll be up at the rear-crack of dawn.

We’ll be at the mall.

We’ll be wearing scarves.

We will NOT however be doing this…

or this…

We will not be running, bumping, shoving…you can’t very well participate in all the “deals” when strolling through the mall carrying this:

Don’t get me wrong, we  love the hustle and bustle, we just don’t participate.  If we happen to find something on sale…and there’s no line, well, we’ve been known to buy a thing or two. But mostly we have a contest. It’s the best contest in the world Peeps. It’s a sport but it doesn’t involve a ball. No batting, catching, teeing off. Nope, this is a contest I can (and always do) actually win!!!

The contest is to see: Which one of us can spot the most of these:

It’s very exciting hunting for women, children and although extremely rare, men wearing antlers on Black Friday.  It’s right up there, I’d imagine, with actually hunting for DEER wearing antlers… ummmm, without all the blood and the taking of an innocent Bambi life, anyhoo, like I said I ALWAYS WIN.

Just to be certain that I win, I keep my own antlers in my purse so I can slip them on at a moments notice and count myself…thus pulling ahead. This is my ace-in-the-hole as none of my hip 20-something daughters would be caught dead in a pair of antlers.

So my girls, Bethany, Stephanie, Emma and I take in the delicious hustle and bustle. Admire all the great deals everyone else is getting while we nibble a munchkin and sip some Dunkin Donuts creamy dreamy coffee.  We meander up and down the festive mall until the crowds reach an unbearable number…that normally happens around 9:30am, then we saunter back out to the car and go to Steak and Shake…

Yes we do. We eat burgers and milkshakes at 9:30 in the morning. And then we go home to take a nap.

Enjoy Black Friday any way you want…me, I’m in it for the snacks.  Oh, and the antlers.

You are too darn funny, girl! I wouldn’t be able to convince my daughter to do thst in a million years….first of all neither one of us drinks coffee….yes, you read that correctly, never have! Second, I didn’t even get all the dishes, glasses, pots, pans etc., etc. WASHED let alone dried and put away til 11:30 last night. Anyhoo, we are all invited to our wonderful friends for dinner so today I am putting away ALL the “fall decor”, then making a snack to take with us, the off to our friends. Tomorrow starts the SERIOUS Christmas decorating WOOOO HOOOOOO! CAN NOT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!! XO, Pinky

That is too funny! I never go shopping on Black Friday!! The chaotic energy drives me crazy! Unfortunatley this means I miss out on some great fun with my sisters and my mom who go every year. Black Friday for me is the day that I do all of my Christmas Cleaning! What I don’t finish on Friday, I finish on Saturday, then I have Sunday to rest before I head back to the classroom.

Darn it! I didn’t know to do the antlers thing, but we shopped today!! J, K, and me. We even ate at Steak and Shake. And you’re right. The best part was the food. :-) Thanks for keeping it fun!

This sounds like way too much fun. I follow your Blog and when I read your post, I had to comment on it. We have these antlers for the Christmas Season, that I bought at Target for $1.00 each. I have missed something here in Sacramento County if this is a tradition on Black Friday. I was out with my son today and Target was rather quiet at 9am and no antlers on shoppers. People were driving their carts like they do on the road this time of the year. Came home to Pumpkin Pancakes that my wonderful husband made. Now I know that I will have to wear them out on occasion when shopping. Maybe I will start something here or get a lot of funny looks.

we drove home thursday night from IL and saw jammed mall parking lots as we approached indianapolis at midnight. not my thing, but a great tradition the way you do it.

just wondering, since i’ve been away from blogs for a week, if you gave away the Richard P. Evans book.

Jenn, I did! Marty from A Stroll Through Life won the little book.
Darlene…here’s the update: we saw NO antlers . We went to an upscale mall and I suppose the woman just don’t like to wear things on their heads! When shopping in the burbs near my house we always see tons!!!
We did spot 2 Christmas sweaters and 1 pair of sequin sneakers! :)

My sister and I were out at 3:45 am and did stand in line at Target. We had a great day, but our breakfast was a spinach stomboli that had at least a clove of garlic in it at the Italian place in our mall. Chic Fil A was the only people serving breakfast and half of the people in the mall were in line for a chicken biscuit, so we decided to eat at the pizza place instead, I think next year I will do the dunkin donuts round before the mall!!!

I have never done the Black Friday thing…I think I’m just too lazy to leave my warm bed early on the morning after Thanksgiving! But people watching and snacks are way more fun than shopping anyway. That I might could get excited about!
