Fun Little Hostess Gift or Party Favor!

by Robin on December 6, 2009

How ’bout making a fun little gift for your hostess!? Or maybe even whip up several sets of these for party favors? Coasters are all over the internet. I made some with tiles and stamps and posted them HERE. But I’ve been wanting to try doing Christmas Coasters using napkins! I think these could be used all winter! Aren’t they cute? And best of all you get to use Mod Podge!!!

Next time you see adorable napkins and think you don’t really need them, remember these coasters! Here’s what ya need:

*Napkins (small ones)

*Matte tiles (got mine at Lowe’s for 16 cents each!)

*Mod Podge

*Cork for the bottom (you can use the tiny cork dots or the rolls of cork)

*Polyurethane for sealing the finished product!

The napkin had 4 images when I unfolded it! So you could do a Craft party and tons of people could share a pack of napkins! I use only the top layer of the napkin. I find the thinner the paper, the better it goes on.

Spread Mod Podge on the tile and place the napkin, carefully rubbing over the top.

Now put on a generous coat of Mod Podge…let it dry and put on another coat!

Put cork on the back side. If you’re using the dots just put them in the corners. I used the roll of cork (because I had it!) and I put 4 big blobs of hot glue in the corners and then placed the cork, which is already sticky. The big blobs of hot glue gave the corners a tiny lift and made me feel like it would reeeeaaally stick.

Now just spray 2 coats of Polyurethane over the tops letting dry in between coats!

I took these with some kitchen towels as a hostess gift to Baby Sister on Thanksgiving. They were such fun to make I’m thinking of party favors for my Let’s Do Dessert Party that’s coming up!

what a cute idea Robin! Do you have any ideas that would be good for children to do at party? I am trying to get a quick craft together for my youngest sons Christmas party at school.

I’m not certain of the measurements but they were the standard size square tiles at Lowe’s or Home Depot. (close to the size of a cocktail or lunch napkin, a little bigger than your palm!!!) Hope that helps

Robin, thank you so much for this lovely idea. I am definately making these for our hostess this Sat. evening. I have one question; in the pics it looks as if the edges of the napkin extend over the tile. Did you fold them over to the back of the tile or did you cut them off? Thanks again.

Coasters are wonderful – just think of all the holidays and special days they can be made for.

Question: the polyurethane applied as sealer – is that to actually seal for use or because the ModPodge has a tendency to stay sticky?

Great project! Really cute and thanks so much for showing us how you did it. I always thought napkins would be too delicate to decoupage but you proved me sooooo wrong! Thank you!

I LOVE this adorable & creative idea! Thanks for sharing. One question, what do you do with the excess napkin hanging off of the sides of the tile? Could this project be done with photographs?

Can you tell me.. Is the modge podge then water proof?? I always thought it was like glue and would turn white if wet…

Reply

Robin December 1, 2011 at 6:51 pm

Wendy, I’ve been using these coasters for over a year and they held up fine w/ the Mod Podge, no turning white! But that’s a great question! Not certain if Mod Podge is actually waterproof but the amount of water on my coasters has been minimal. good luck!xo
