Let’s Make a Snowflake!

by Robin on January 5, 2010

As you know, I’m a Southern girl who longs for snow, and since we don’t get a lot of the white stuff here in Atlanta, I made some!Day-3~365--I-Made-A-Snowfla

It’s a good old Martha Stewart craft but as I started looking online, it’s actually as much a Science experiment  as it is a craft! Here’s the link to the instructions per Martha Stewart. It’s super easy you just need some Borax…which is apparently a laundry booster. I’ve never in my life even seen Borax until I did this.

Borax

You’ll also need pipe cleaners and a jar…(Martha tells you how to cut and twist your pipe cleaners into a snow flake…I made a couple of different sizes)

About-to-make-a-snowflake!

The more jars the better right?  I used wooden skewers to keep the snowflakes suspended in the jars but you could use pencils.

Snow-Flakes

I also used a few drops of blue food coloring…again, the link to Martha Stewart explains this in beautiful detail but roughly :

Mix 1 cup boiling water to 3 Tablespoons Borax and 3 drops of food coloring…it takes MUCH more than the 1 cup of water but that’s the winning formula.

Making-Snow-Flakes

I took this photo after about 2 hours…you can see the crystals starting to form! (But Martha says leave them overnight, and I always obey Martha for heaven’s sake)

Making-my-own-snowflakes

Here’s one of the big ones! Isn’t it exciting? FYI: DO NOT use plastic containers…I tried and they didn’t work.

Brewing-Snowflakes

And WaaaLaaa! Here’s what we were left with…after we cleaned up the AMPLE mess! I think your kiddos would have a bunch of fun making these!

How beautiful . . . I live in western Michigan, so we get plenty of the real stuff,
but I am so going to make these for decorating the next two months.
Thanks for the link!

This will make a great homeschooling project for my crafty teen daughters! I used to use 20 Mule Team Borax in my wash when my kids were little. I have also driven by the place in the Mojave Desert where they mine borax many times. It is actually the largest borax mine in the world. FYI. :0)

Unfortunately, we’ve had real snow on the ground here since before Christmas. And we’re expecting more tomorrow. But, these Borax snowflakes are way too cool! In fact, I love your whole winter decorating theme! (As for Martha…I never know whether to love or hate her. So, I mostly fluctuate back and forth on that issue.)
