Furniture Before and After!

by Robin on May 26, 2010

Here’s a peek at the Before dining room furniture…it was super dark wood…

Thanks to Behr Paint with Primer I tackled my dinning room furniture, a project I really thought I’d never be able to do. I have arthritis in my hands and 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of paint would have caused me grief for weeks. When I realized I only had to do 2 coats with the Paint with Primer I jumped right in!

This stain glass is my inspiration for my color changes in my house. (I’ve done loads of color-changes lately) I’m on a mission to infuse these scrumptious colors into our little world. I’m in love with the soft hues of blues and greens and the sandy neutral color.

I distressed the furniture after I painted. That was really the hardest part.

I used Antique White on the table…

DSC_0846 A  color called Beach Sand that I had color matched in Behr Ultra Paint with Primer for the Buffet.

A tealish blue color on the hutch. (My Home Depot “Paint Specialist” color matched it for me)

Then I painted 3 chairs the teal color and 3 chairs the Beach Sand color…

I love the way it turned out…the room feels bigger, brighter…fresh.

How beautiful! Great job! I have never tried anything like this and would not know where to start- or how to distress it! Need lessons!

Hi, Jane it is really easy to do! Start with a base coat first the color that you want to least show, in this case it looks like she wanted the stained furnature to be to be the base color. Next step is to paint your top color she chose white paint with primer. After this dries for a day or two the fun begins. Last step take a palm sander and sand the parts that you want the base color to shine through. Thus giving a white washed look. Easy as pie! Have fun

LOVE it! Looks like it belongs on a page in the Romantic Homes magazine that I am addicted to. Wish I didn’t hate painting so much.

They look great, Robin! A job well done! I don’t think I would have the confidence to try distressing after painting but you did a wonderful job as it really gives it an antique look. I love anything stained glass and think this piece is beautiful! :0)

I came over from FB because you scared me this morning with talk of your blog being down. I feared that I would never be able to recreate those KILLER blonde brownie thingies that are evilly good. I’ve printed it now and am breathing a sigh.

This project turned out so well. Pretty!

You did a great job! Even with just two coats I’m sure that took considerable time, but it was worth all the effort!

I have a very similar buffet and credenza that my husband/children bought me for mothers day this year. Its a lighter wood than yours but I was thinking of painting it either black to match my big table (legs/body are black and top is walnut wood) or creamy white and do a coastal look since we’ve recently moved to a town thats technically water front (the pier is 2 blocks away). Now that Ive seen your project, Im soooooo loving the white distressed look. Thanks so much for sharing…

I just found your blog and love the things you do! I have a dining room set almost identical to yours, and I would love to do what you’ve done, but it belonged to my grandparents, so I don’t know if I have the nerve to paint over the wood! Maybe one day!

Behr Paint with Primer is the BOMB! I love it so very much. I decided to try it after being advised against it as it was “so thick and dried fast”, but I like those qualities really. I would have only needed 1 coat of a steel blue over my olive green bedroom wall although I did do 2 coats just for good measure. It is amazing paint. I think the paint did the work and I just moved the brush ;O)
Great job with the furniture…it is soooo beautiful and sweet.
Do you just sand a little to distress it or do you use a glaze? I need to learn this next! I am also ALWAYS PAINTING…as I sit here with figernails glazed with paint and primer, I realize that this is true for me as well.

Your furniture looks beautiful, Robin! I wish I had known about Primer/Paint when I did my dining room. I was so ready to be finished when I was only half way through the project! Cindy

How hard was this project to do? Did you have to sand the furniture first? What did you do to distress it? Did you put some kind of topcoat on to protect the finish? Sorry for so many questions but I think your room is the most beautiful one I’ve seen. I so want to redo my furniture. Just a little bit scared. lol

Thanks

Robin November 18, 2011 at 5:49 am

Jerrie…the project wasn’t as hard as it was long! I lightly sanded the furniture first and to distress it I sanded it after it was dry. Carefully choosing the places that maybe old furniture might be rubbed. I used Minwax Polycrylic Matte topcoat on the top surfaces only.
Good luck w/ your painting projects…

did you paint your furniture a brown color first, or is the brown that comes through the original/previous color of your furniture pieces?

Reply

Robin January 24, 2012 at 6:57 am

Brittany, the brown coming through is just the original color of the wood/stain! xo
