A Summer State of Mind…

by Robin on June 16, 2010

Summer is a state of mind.

Are there certain things that immediately take you there…to that Summer state of mind?

I like surrounding myself with some of those things…

the little things

That’s what I had in mind when I made this…

It’s super-easy! Just grab one of those cheap unfinished frames from Michaels and use some beachy colored paint in random patterns…

When it dries paint over the entire frame with a lighter beachy color…then gently sand until you get the look you want. The first colors will peak thorough, it’s a fun technique~

Now cover a piece of cardboard (the size of the cut-out in the frame) with burlap…yes, this is yet another use for our beloved burlap!

And hot glue a pretty shell, sand dollar or starfish right onto the burlap…

And just because I didn’t want to have to pack this away after Summer, I tried another burlap covered piece of cardboard…

The button heart can stay up all year in my fun-room!

So, today…nibble a popsicle, go barefoot,  lay in a hammock, or just glance at a tiny shell…but do a little something  to get yourself into a Summer state of mind…

You should get a booth somewhere and make things and sell them. These are really cute. You are good.

What a great idea, and it looks beautiful. I agree with Velvet; your work would be a hit, Robin!

And you’re so right about getting into a summer state of mind. We went bird watching yesterday, which is something we do year round, but doing it in a field full of daisies and dragonflies positively sings summer! xoxo Gigi

Great painting technique. I will have to try it out. As for summer, I am mountain boy myself. I see this working well with objects form a hike as well. Thanks!!

This would look great in either my family room or bathroom. Both are done in a seashore theme ( lighthouses, boats, etc). I love the ideas you come up, easy and look great! ~Eileen :0)

When I was a little girl summer meant freedom. Freedom from school, getting up early, and wearing dresses. Freedom to play and play and play.

Now, summer means heat and humidity.

Great craft idea. Beautiful and easy too! Thanks for the share.

Sure does have a summery feel ~ actually kind of a cooling effect. I feel a little like Magnolia… the heat and humidity is what makes summer unpleasant to me. Especially when folks just want to be inside for air-conditioner comfort. I don’t like the house shut up tight.

Kindly, ldh

Ok, this has nothing to do with your (gorgeous) frame, but you said popsicle. And I love them. And I just discovered Edy’s fruit bars.

Oh my soul, Rob… You have to try them. They are so flavorful… The strawberry actually had a chunk of strawberry in it! But yet they are still totally icy like a Popsicle. I recommend grape… My favorite…. Tastes like Hubba Bubba bubble gum.

Ok. I’m done ranting over a fruit bar now… But very little happens in my world so this was exciting ;)

I LOVE the button variation! I’m going to steal your idea and make something similar for my sewing room. It’s so perfect! Thanks so much for sharing. I just love your blog!

i’m inspired by your fast from sweets, robin. i need to become less dependent on sugar too.

I just love seashells! Your frame is pretty! Did you find the shell like that, already sliced revealing the spiralling?

Robin, one thing I do when I go to the beach is grab some of the sand and shells and save them. Last time was Hilton Head and I brought home a paper cup full of the sand with shells mixed in. It took a while for the “ocean” to evaporate. I put this in an old blue mason jar as a memory. Sometimes I just walk over and shake it around, thinking about the time spent there. It’s kind of neat the different colors of the sand from different beaches…pink, white, dark gray. I’ve heard that the Georgia coast has dark sand because of the titanium in the mix.

And I now have a playlist on my blog with summer music to listen to while I’m on my computer. It helps me to get in a summer state of mind.

More ideas please! You need to come visit me in Dublin. You always have a friend down here…ME!!

Deborah, I did find the shell like that! I buy them when I’m at the beach in bunches so that’s probably where it came from !!! xo
