Living Well…not for sissies…

by Robin on June 17, 2010

I’m giving up sweet delicious junk food for a month…I started Monday.  Now, in case you don’t know me, I’m not an average sweet-eater. I’m a pro. I would tell you about  a typical day’s food for me but I’m embarrassed! Homemade cookies for breakfast, ice-cream cone for lunch and…woops, I wasn’t going to tell you…never-mind.

Anyhoo, I replaced cookies for this yumminess…organic yogurt, granola, almonds and fruit.

I’ve needed to make my food pretty this week. Truly I’m missing my snacks…and “pretty” makes everything taste sweeter.

It’s not been easy giving up all that High Fructose Corn Syrup. Headaches and moodiness are the two main issues I’ve noticed. But I’m determined.

ps…I made some delicious homemade granola and posted it HERE

Thanks to everyone who left comments (Monday) about this monumental endeavor. Some of you told me of your struggles and even your healthy habits! I love hearing about how others live well. My bud Debi mentioned that God didn’t want me to be a slave to anything…that really hit the nail on the head. I’m mulling over my relationship with the sweet stuff… I think there’s a deeper lesson here.

Live Well today my friends…xo

Now this little sweet treat looks sooooo good. I’m impressed–even organic yogurt. And doesn’t the little parfait glass just make the presentation.

Your yogurt parfait looks yummy and summery! We’ve just celebrated 2 birthdays in a row and I can feel the sugar. The more I eat, the more I want! Time to de-sugar and you are my inspiration! Going to the beach in exactly 10 days and that gets me eating healthier, too. But, you know, my absolute favorite breakfast is a piece of apple pie :) Yum. Hang in there!

That does look yummy- and so much more enjoyable when served so pretty- makes an old brown cookie unappealing, don’t you think?

I too, am trying to do this- and it is NOT easy. Maybe I just need to add me some “pretty”. Thank you.

Looks good! Wow, making it look pretty changes our perception. What other things can we dress up in our lives that just makes us feel better? What else am I a slave to??? Gosh Robin this pretty little glass is full of some real reflection…thanks for the snack… Have a pretty day.

Hello! Thank you so much for visiting me–you have such a BEAUTIFUL, happy, graceful blog… I just love it here! So nice to meet you. And wishing you the best with your cutting back on sugar & sweets. My husband & I have been doing the same since January. It’s not always easy. But once you start replacing the “badies” with more healthy you actually start wanting the healthier options even more. And making it all look pretty too, sure does help. Thanks so much for your comforting comment–it’s been tough days now with my father ill. The blogging community really knows how to lift a person when they need it–I’ve been blessed extra much with that this week. Happy Days :o )

I went on the HCG Diet nine weeks ago and have had no sugar except what occurs naturally in the food I am supposed to eat on the diet and having lost 22 pounds I don’t think I will be adding much back into my diet during this last three week phase. I have found I can live without it. You can too!

I am so proud of you! This is monumental. Are you feeling better yet? I have been off of HFCS for five weeks now and I just feel better and better as time goes on. I bet you can feel the difference! Are you cutting white sugar, too? Have you tried Stevia in the Raw? Agave nectar? Oh, this is so exciting.

Hydrogenated oils are next. ha ha.

You’re perfectly right: aspect & color are of tremendous importance when you watch what you eat!
2 other tips that I use and that can help you:
1. eat what you want for breakfast: eating my deliciously sweet, chocolatey & fat cereals helps me not being obsessed with sugar for a few hours (don’t worry, I’m not really on a diet and I WON’T give up sugar, even for a month: I’m not as brave as you are!)
2. prepare colorful dishes (use spices & look for Indian recipes) that smell good (I was about to write “smelly” but thought it wiser not to…) and, at least once or twice a week, containing “sweet” ingredients, such as beetroots, carrots, or yams
Good luck for the rest of the month!

Robin, have you read the book: Women, Food and God???It is awesome!!!! I think you would really like it. I just recommended it to several friends and they are going to all read it then we will get together to discuss it. Your parfait looks scrumptious!!!!!!!!!!! XO, Pinky

Just pretend you’re me and allergic to half the foods available… ;) I never thought in a million years I could live without chocolate… But I barely think about it anymore. It really does become habit, I promise.

I love to bake, especially with 2 enthusiastic 3yr olds, who love to “help” me! I have such a weakness for it…ugh. Anyway, I am cutting back too. I am not one of those naturally slim people. Teaching the three’s class for VBS at our church this week is really helping! I am too worn out to think about cooking anything! Ha! Eating small reasonably healthy snacks every 3 to 4 hrs works the best for me. And drinking water, and walking. I love exercise. Although, I don’t have the energy to do that right now! :) Anyway, the yogurt & granola looks great!
