Expanding DIY Project~The Kitchen Cabinet Edition

by Robin on July 16, 2010

The Husband I tend to start projects and they exxxxpand….

But, Behr Paint with Primer has come through for me again!

While painting my kitchen at 2 in the morning I started noticing the trim and the cabinets. We refinished our cabinets and kitchen trim about 10 years ago using a 3 step process that looked “antiqued”.

I loved it at the time, although it was a long and pain-in-the -rear project…primer-paint-paint-stain-topcoat…I swore on my life I’d NEVER repaint a cabinet again. EVER.

But…

Monday when I was painting and nose to nose with every square inch of that kitchen I was horrified with my trim and cabinets. The more I’ve cleaned them over the years, it seems some of the finish has worn off. They just look dirty.

I nearly had a heart attack,  how could I not have noticed this?

When The Husband came home and started bragging on me for my 16 hour work day, I gingerly broached the trim and cabinet subject, planning my words carefully so he wouldn’t go running out of the house, I started small…

“Honey, this trim is in really bad shape. Look ” (Pause and point).

“Do you think  maybe I should paint it before you start refinishing the floors? Don’t worry I’ll do…”

“Let’s do the cabinets too” he interrupted.

I’m either very convincing or he’d already noticed the ‘issue’.

Soooooo, I’ve been painting trim and kitchen cabinets!

cabinet colorI’m using a Behr color, Sandstone Cove and of course it’s the Ultra Paint and Primer.

I painted some of the lower cabinets in a custom color match I used when painting some of my furniture…(chair on the left…)

This project, which also includes a bathroom and 3 doors, has gone so fast! I’m finished and thrilled with the result.

I could not have done it without that darn Behr Paint with Primer though. I’m icing my hand, which is pretty swollen and wearing Thermacare heat wraps on my shoulder and hip and taking a prescription Naproxen  :)

(This is what happens when you’re pushing 50 and have arthritis and continue to do DIY projects!)

*****

We have moved all the furniture out of the kitchen and dinning room and today The Husband starts his project…refinishing the wood floors. (heaven help him)

DSC_0130But it hasn’t been all walls and trim…
I’ve painted some fun things too, like the little buffet table that started out like this…(which I like, but I wanted to lighten it a bit…)

DSC_0252
I mixed some of my tealish paint with Behr Antique White to soften the tone.

And I hit my my mirror and shutters with a bit of color. It started like this…

Okay…so this weekend
The Husband will be refinishing the floor, I’m starting on the den, which is where this project started in the first place!

Can I get an AMEN for inspiration…sigh.

Do something relaxing for you? Sorry, no can do — you’ve inspired me to jump into my own projects! (And it’s 5:29 in the freakin’ AM here in the Land of Texas, so, honey, Lord only knows when you were up doing this post! Whew! No wonder you need ice, heat, AND Naproxen!) Girl! Everything is looking great, though, and I can’t wait to see the finished results! You go, Girlfriend!

Grins!

I am in Lawrence this weekend doing orientation for KU with Ashlyn and also helping Nathan to paint the inside of his first house he just bought. On your recommendation alone I bought the Behr paint with primer…..just hoping it lives up to all that you say because my time here is short!!!!! If not, I’ll be having words with you….ha! Tell Mike there are worse things than redoing a floor. I left Calvin and Ben at home to finish up the installation of hard wood floors through the whole house. They have been at it for 3 weeks now. Our stuff arrives next week. If he doesn’t want to still be married by the time I get back I will refer him to your website! (It’s the old fashion, nail each piece in kind of floor)

Tammy!!! Oh you’ll love the paint…I’ve used EVERYTHING out there. I love this the best…
Mike put in our floors, he and his trusty nail gun, 10 years ago! He would have to soak his hand every morning to get it moving!
You guys are as crazy as we are!
Do you have twitter? If so I ask @BehrPaint questions all the time and they answer really fast! If not, call me :)
xoxoxo
(I’m painting the dinning room and trim…just on a whim, I’m supposed to be in the den already! Ahhhhhhhhhh :0

Hi Robin, My cabinets need a facelift as well. Did you take the doors off the hinges? How do you prep? I’m not sure if I need to sand or strip, or none, or all of the above. I am amazed that you got it done so quickly. It is likely to be a different story for this distracted, ADD ( ha ha) gal. Your house looks great!

Ann…the first time we refinished them we took the doors off. We did a 3 step process and it was just too much trouble! This time I just removed the knobs and jumped right in! The beauty of the Behr Paint with Primer is the step you eliminate and the wonderful coverage. I’ve been painting every piece of furniture in the house so painting the cabinets, doors attached, didn’t seem like a big deal…and it wasn’t!
Oh, my best tip besides the Behr P & P is a good (at least 13-15 $) angle brush and small foam rollers…those rollers are Ah-mazing!
Good luck…xoxo

john is up in bryce’s old room as i type this. it’s the final bedroom to redo…. and we have a time crunch…cause the bed is coming saturday… haha…
but honestly it never ends.

i just read about a woman who is selling all of her possessions and just keeping a few back packs worth of belongings…plus her laptop… wow, talk about the simple life… hmmmmmm…
why does that appeal to me so much?

sending you lots of love…and hoping your taking care of yourself….xxo, kim
