Beachy Cottage meets Shabby Cottage…The Kitchen Cabinet Edition

by Robin on August 25, 2010

***Giveaway OVER***

It’s the Behr Ultra Paint with Primer Giveaway Week around my little blog-home!

Welcome! Details on lots of ways to enter at the end of this tiny post…but first,

We’ve been doing a bit of a DIY Project this summer! ~All the posts are HERE under All Things Home DIY~ Today it’s…

Beachy Cottage meets Shabby Cottage~The Kitchen Cabinet Edition!

DSC_0207

Painting older cabinets can give the kitchen a major face lift. I know I’ve done it two times…

The kitchen doors, cabinets and trim started out stained oak. Our house was built in the 80′s. ‘Nuff said.

We painted and antiqued them at some point…(See the door…)

DSC_0253
This was before Behr Ultra Paint with Primer so the labor (2 coats of primer, 2 coats of paint, wipe down with stain, finish with polycleric) was ridiculous. Throughout that original project with the cabinets, doors and trim I could be heard screaming through the house…”As God as my witness I will NEVER paint cabinets again.”

http://robinrane.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/dscn0716.jpg

Never say never…(See the old cabinets above? I couldn’t find any really good pics!)

When I started painting the walls in the kitchen I got up close and personal with the trim…it looked awful.  I inspected the finish on the cabinets and doors…hummmmm.
The next day I started repainting the kitchen trim, doors and cabinets.

(Yes, I realize there’s a chance I have a physiological “condition” that  requires some sort of medication.)

Anyhoo, this time the painting process was different. This time I used Behr Ultra.

DSC_0223With the primer in the paint it was painless. Just 2 coats of paint!

(I very lightly sanded the cabinet door fronts before painting…)

On the fronts of the cabinets I used a thin coat of polycrylic in satin to seal and make cleaning easier. (See more about using Polycrylic HERE)

PolycrylicI used a little foam roller for the bigger areas. The paint goes on like a dream with a foam roller.

And for the trim and smallish places I used my BFF:  The Paint Brush. The angled 2″ brush is my go-to size and shape brush. I don’t use painters tape because with this brush I can lay the paint on with perfection…DSC_0219Ok, maybe not perfection but I keep a wet rag with me to clean up small mistakes and mostly it looks good!

I used my molding, wainscoting and door color on most of the cabinets.

Behr Ultra Sandstone Cove-Semi Gloss

Painting CabinetsBut on some of the bottom row of cabinets I wanted a little fun. So I used one of my 3 true-love colors.

This was custom matched by my Behr Paint Specialist at The Home Depot. Since it’s a custom match it doesn’t have a name but I call it Sea Grass!

I’m going to post the paint code on Friday…

DSC_0193You need to take all the hardware off the cabinet doors before painting. To save money on this little project I thought I’d simply paint the cabinet knobs I already had…I used another one of my 3 true-love paint colors. Also custom matched at The Home Depot.

I call this one Rainy day at the Beach. (Thanks for your suggestions!) I’ll post the paint code on Friday!

DSC_0181I did not take the doors off and I did of course paint  the inside of the cabinet doors.

The cabinets look fresh and clean and brightened up the kitchen! It was a pretty quick project that produced a huge result!

Fabulous!!! You make it sound & look so easy!!

I have used Behr Ultra Paint w/primer too and love the coverage, but I have a question when you painted your cabinets.

Besides cleaning any dust off the cabinets, did you have to wash them down before painting? And, when you left the doors on, I see you painted the hinges – I wouldn’t have thought to do that, but it looks great! And what a time saver. Did you also cover the hinges with Polycrylic?

Thanks for sharing!

Your cabinets are fantastic – you amaze me. I wish I had you get up and go. When you did your stair railings, did you use a brush or foam? That has got to be my first projects – my railings are screaming for help!

The kitchen cabinets look beautiful and new! The finish is so smooth and painting the cabinet knobs was better than purchasing new ones.
Having a pretty kitchen makes preparing food more pleasant. : )
You have done a great job and the paint is so easy to use!!!!
You probably need a NEW paintbrush by now………
Keep inspiring others with your talent~

I am inspired to get out of the 80′s and paint my cabinets. Now, I just need to win the Behr paint.

Sure do wish that this could have been posted two weeks ago…just finished a very labor intensive kitchen paint job with one coat of primer and two coats of paint, yuk, yuk, yuk!! But, there is a glimmer in this story. We still have to paint the beadboarding for the lower half of the walls. I will certainly be making a trip to Home Depot to check out the Behr paint! Thanks so much for posting such an informative post and for what sounds like a great giveaway!
Fondly,
Ann

We use Behr paint on all our mission trips requiring painting!! I evenhave a Behr hat so I am familiar with their paint- love it!! I do not do good at painting around my house, I painted 6 years ago and that’s it; so some new paint would inspire me for sure!

You didn’t? I think I just read your blog a year or so ago when you antiqued the cabinets. Never say never is right! Looks great and sounds like Behr Paint w/primer was much easier and saved you some steps. Love what you have done with the whole house.

Your cabinets look great! I’ve used the Behr paint plus primer twice over the last few months and I totally agree, it’s wonderful. One coat coverage is my friend! I’m planning to paint our kitchen cabinets this fall, along with my dad’s kitchen cabinets. I’ll definitely be using this paint. Just a quick question, did you sand the cabinets at all before painting, especially since they had the Polycrylic finish on them? Thanks for sharing a great project and what a fab giveaway!
