How about another handmade gift idea?

I thought I’d give these little crayon rolls a try just in time for Christmas gift giving! The best tutorial I’ve found, and I’ve looked at a hundred, is at Skip To My Lou. I give all credit where it is due as I followed that tutorial almost exactly except I used Heat & Bond Vinyl.

Here’s my take…

You need 3 coordinating fabrics:

*2 pieces of fabric 5 x 16  1/2 .(For the inside & outside)

*1 piece fabric 6 x 16 1/2 -folded in half and ironed. (This is for the pocket)

* 1 piece of lightweight fusible  interfacing 5 x 16  1/2

* Ric-Rac Trim

* Ribbon for tie

* Heat & Bond Vinyl 5 x16  1/2

Iron on the interfacing to wrong side of the inside fabric.

Follow instructions and iron the vinyl to the right side of the inside piece of fabric.

Pin the pocket piece onto the inside piece of fabric. Starting 1  1/4 inch from the edge of pocket piece, mark and then sew lines 1 inch apart, back stitching at the top to reinforce.

Pin ric rack around entire inside piece. Now sew the ric rack on.

Sew inside to outside piece. Right sides together. Leave an opening to turn right side out…the turning can be tricky. Hang in there and just do it!

When it’s right side out you’ll need to iron your fabric. Be careful not to get the hot iron on the vinyl. Iron the opening closed, it’ll help when you top-stitch it closed!

Top stitch around edges and closing the opening while you’re at it! Add crayons!

Many thanks to Skip to My Lou I love that website to the moon and back!

    This is so great! I have yet to make crayon rolls but I really want to now. I love that it has 3 different fabrics that are vinyl coated and rick rack! Super cute. Visiting from Fabric Tuesday.

    I have made a few crayola totes with the inserts for the crayons on the inside but I have not made a separate crayon holder. Maybe I need to try one.

    I love yours with the rick rack edging! Gorgeous!

    I ran across your tutorial today and am interested in whether or not you would be interested in selling one of these lovely crayon holders.
