I had the bright idea to make a stone table-runner a few weeks ago, since then I’ve been searching for rocks!
The Husband and I were hanging out at Floor & Decor (a tile and flooring outlet) the other day and I spotted these smooth stones used for tile projects! There were several colors to choose from. I liked the whitish ones!
They were glued to a flimsy mesh so I needed a more sturdy backing. Plastic mesh, the kind for hooking rugs was perfect.( I used 3 sheets) When I experimented I realized I didn’t like them glued directly on the plastic since the plastic showed through. Also, I wanted something to soften the look of the stones so I grabbed my stash of burlap and played around with it until I came up with the idea to put the mesh under the burlap and remove the rocks from their flimsy backing…
The stones came off of their backing with no trouble. I layered the plastic mesh on the bottom, then the burlap, then the stones…placing them in a way that wasn’t too straight-lined along the edges.
I wanted the table-runner to look kinda like a stone path 🙂 Using my high temp glue gun I glued each stone in place to the burlap. (the glue goes through the burlap and onto the plastic mesh and waaa-laaa! The layers are glued together) ***I did this project on my “project” table covered with the thick plastic that I use to protect the table when I paint, that way the hot glue didn’t stick to the table!
After I finished gluing the stones on I cut the burlap a couple of inch’s larger than the stone table-runner. Then I frayed the edges a bit, but made certain the burlap still covered the mesh.
My little stone table-runner adds a natural element to the table and the color reminds me of beach stones…
The total cost to make the runner was: $20.00. How much, I wondered, would something similar cost if I bought it?
So, I googled, and here’s what I found: From Beach Creation a 60″ pebble runner for $69.00.
I’m happy with mine for under twenty bucks!
I kinda love this table-runner. 🙂
