Have you ever tried string art? It’s so much fun and with a little help, this would be a great project for older kiddos!
I first tried my hand at string art when I did some projects for another website (it’s not gone up yet)- I did the vintage inspired flag…
Since then, I’ve been wanting to try a sea horse! Soooo…whatda ya think?
In case you might want to try your own project, let me show you how easy it is!
First, take some wood and put it together on the back side with a couple more pieces of wood!
Next, decide on a pattern…I found loads of photos online and just drew the image free hand while I was looking at the computer image. (You could always print a free image though)
I painted the wood in layers starting with a Behr color I had : Folk Song
Then after it dried I painted over the whole piece in Behr MARQUEE Folly
(remember the beachy stools HERE!)
After the paint dried, I sanded a little so that some of the Folk Song showed through on the edges…
Cut out your pattern and tape it to the wood-
Using small nails (they don’t have to be the exact same size!), outline the pattern. Don’t hammer them all the way in…
Take some string tie it off on one nail & outline the pattern (I went around twice because my string was pretty thin.
Remove pattern.
Now just zig-zag all over the place until you have a design you like! Tie off when done!
I added some additional nails and dark string to make the eye…
See how easy this is? You could do a mermaid or a fish or a summer word like: BEACH-SEASIDE-RELAX…just imagine all the little things you can do!
Enjoy your day sweet friends ~ ox
I love this! I haven’t thought about string art in forever. I’m going to try it, but I have a question. Did you outline it first then zig-zag ? Thank you…….. oh, and what kind of string did you use?
Diana, I outlined first (2 times) and then proceeded to zig zag! 🙂 The string I used is on a bolt (crochet string) but when I did the Vintage look American Flag I used string I got at the grocery store it was in the hardware section. It was a little thicker than the crochet thread and worked great for a bigger project…but it was ecru…so I dyed it! 🙂 I do things the hard way sometimes! ox

This is so pretty, Robin. You brought back a memory of long ago when my Dad made one. His had a black background and he used copper wire to make a ship. It looked really nice!
Eileen xxoo
Eileen, I bet the copper wire was beautiful! xo
oh my gosh, that’s amazing. love the look of your whole mantle, too.
Thank you so much xo
Very cute! I haven’t seen string art in ages. Your drawing skills are much better than mine. I would definitely have to print the image out, lol.
