I’m so excited about this post! I did a fun Picnic Basket Makeover that I want to show you! But as mad about plaid as I am, the picnic basket makeover isn’t the only thing I’m excited about!
Here’s the real fun…today, I’m joining 17 blog-friends for the 3rd Annual Thrift Benefit for Sheltered Animals! We all visited our local thrift stores, specifically those thrift stores that benefit sheltered animals. I went to the Cherokee Humane Society Thrift Store which is about 30 minutes from me.
I passed several thrift stores on the way to the Humane Society Thrift Store, but I love the idea of donating and buying from a thrift store that helps sheltered animals…here’s our rescue…Ollie. Our boy is getting so old and his health is failing but he’s a joy to Mike and I…
And here is our once-feral, Reba-The-Cat…I can’t tell you how much I adore this girl…
These animals have made a huge impact on our lives, so if something small, like donating and shopping at a thrift store, can help other sheltered animals…why in the world wouldn’t I do that?!
And speaking of shopping…here’s the picnic basket I got while I was there…If you have a second…I’d love to tell you what I did to give it a makeover …
I started with some plaid flannel and plaid tissue paper…’cause I’m mad about plaid!
Before I put the tissue paper on, I painted the edges with chalky paint in a dark gray. (Americana Chalky Finish in Relic)
When the paint was dry, I put the tissue paper on the basket and cut it to size then used a decoupage medium (DecoArt Decou-Page) to adhere the tissue paper to the basket…put a generous coat of the medium on the basket and lay the cut pieces of tissue on top-work in sections to make it easier and when you get the basket completely covered, put a coat of the decoupage medium on top of the tissue to seal.
To finish off the inside, simply cut fabric to the right size. Be sure to add an overlap to your cuts so you can turn under. I used a hot glue gun to stick the fabric to the inside of the basket. It’s not difficult if you work in sections…
And there you have it!
A $3.00 picnic basket with a makeover! I’m going to use this for decoration this holiday season…
I’m thinking it’ll sit under the tree holding lots of presents!
If you’d like to find a thrift store benefiting shelter animals in your area, google Humane Society Thrift Store in: your area or check HERE for more listings.

This is going to make a perfect holiday decoration! I never in a million years would have thought to cover this basket with tissue paper and line it with fabric. You are so creative!
I love your basket, particularly the plaid! Such clever use of the tissue paper!
Your basket is just adorable. Good for you to help support the animals..we donate to Clean Water people overseas that have no fresh water.

So very cute! It would look great sitting under your tree! We help out our local shelter too. Our friend opened up her own shelter this past January and we are spending a lot of time helping out. It such a joy to play with the animals and then see them get a good and loving home. Your little guys are just precious!
