The Husband made a rustic wood cake stand last weekend! Another of my requests for the upcoming fall party. If you and I are buds on Instagram you might remember a few weeks ago when I posted a photo of our gorgeous River Birch tree being taken down because it was killing our plumbing…there was no way The Husband and I were just going to do away with that tree…
He cut some slabs with a chain saw and I put them in our spare freezer for a week, I don’t know why I put them in the freezer peeps but my thought was, if they had any kind of bugs I could get rid of them that way. Anyhoo, after a week in the deep-freeze The Husband ran a slab through his wood planer a few times…if you don’t have a planer you could use your sander it would just take longer.
He also cut a stump out of a big limb…there was lots of bark and he used a drill with a wire brush tool (They have those at your local home improvement store) to take off most of the bark till he had it down to the beautiful light-color bark that’s signature Birch Tree…
A bit of wood glue…
Spread just-right so as not to ooze out…
Then he clamped it overnight…
When the glue was dry, he drilled into the stump almost to the top with a 3/8 ” drill bit. Then screwed the top on for extra sturdiness …(be careful your screw isn’t too long or it’ll come through the top of the wood slab)
Perfect! Don’t my Coffee Filter Flowers (Posted HERE) look pretty sitting on the cake stand? This is going to be great for my fall family party and wouldn’t it be pretty for rustic weddings? (I’ve “ordered” 2 more from The Husband 🙂 )
Sending love my sweet friends

Cindy, Thank you sooooo much for pinning and sharing, you’re so sweet! (can’t wait to tell The Husband he has orders waiting if he’d just open an etsy shop!) I would love to link up tonight, I’m going to do my BEST to remember! sending love my friend ox
not knowing the dimensions or weight of any of the elements, my first wonder is–what occurs with the weight of the beautiful cake on this, cutting process. ??Is there any issue with being topheavy and dumping the cake?? I am NOT trying to be negative just want to know…
Brenda you aren’t being negative at all my friend, in fact you helped me realize that I need to put a blurb in the post addressing this! Thank you! We picked out a limb (the pedestal) that was wide enough and sturdy enough that it’s not precarious at all. The size of the wood slab isn’t too big so a cake would need to be a smaller cake or a bunch of cupcakes!
He cut everything with a chain saw! Again, thank you so much for bring up your questions…if you have any more, don’t hesitate to ask! ox
That is lovely, Robin!! Is your hubby taking orders??!!
Ruby, I’m going to open that man an Etsy shop!!! (I’m kinda serious 🙂 ) xoox
Oh wow! That is fabulous! I’ve seen pictures of them used at rustic weddings. 🙂 Just gorgeous! 🙂
Thank you Gina! I’ve seen some of those rustic wedding pics too and just fell in love with the look! ox

I am smitten right now with anything rustic! I ordered something similar on the craft supply sight called Save On Crafts and cant wait to use it! I also ordered some smaller “stumps” to put pumpkins on! I LOVE that yours actually came from your own yard! How special! Would love to see pics later on how you used this! 🙂
Char, you and I are on the same page with all things rustic!!! Love the idea about the pumpkins! I’ll post pics of the party with something yummy on my cake stands! xoox

I just might have to put a chainsaw on my Christmas wish list this year. I love the rustic look of this, and have always wanted place mats made of wood as well. Love your idea!
