The Husband and I have been married for 28 years! We started our life together with people whispering: “they’ll never make it” us promising each other we’d: “grow old together”.
I can’t really blame people for doubting us, we were kinda going against the odds.
We met at church in early spring. He was a greeter helping me and my three tiny babies find a seat. We fell in mad love really fast and he embraced my three little ones as his own without an ounce of hesitation.
He asked me to marry him the following autumn at a church Thanksgiving dinner in front of our church family. I remember the soft lighting, our friends sitting in a circle, my little girls off playing in another room and my baby boy squeaky clean in footy pajamas snuggled in my lap. The Husband bent his knee in front of me while our sweet pastor’s wife scooped up baby Timothy…the rest is a bit of a blur. With all attention focused on me I folded up and zoned out.
The Husband didn’t know then that I HATE being the center of attention. HATE all eyes on me. We laugh about that every year when we look back and remember how for him, proposing in front of friends was the perfect proposal while for me, it was physically painful 🙂
We had a lot to learn about each other…
But 28 years later- we’re sitting here, in the still moments before dawn, sipping coffee and laughing at the miracle of “us”.
“So…how DID we make it all these years?” He asks me.
The answer rolled off my tongue because I’ve thought it a thousand times…
“Because every day you’re teaching me how to be unselfish. You are the most unselfish person I’ve ever known-and you made me want to be that way too…”
He smiles because he knows it’s true.
“And you’re teaching me to say I’m sorry-in every issue, you look for what you did wrong and own it-I had to learn to do that too or I would just be a jerk.
I laugh at the thought of him being a jerk because he could never be one.
