I’m making the baby bedding for my daughter Bethany’s first baby. She got the little quilt at her baby shower…the fabric is so lovely…very vintage inspired.
For anyone who can sew a straight line I want to show you how to make a Disappearing 9 Patch! I’m not going to show you how to make a baby quilt, if you want to make a baby quilt, I did a (very basic) tutorial for making a baby quilt HERE.
This will be all about the easy, easy Disappearing 9 Patch…I love it because it looks like it’s hard…but it’s not! I’ve seen this used for runners, small table squares and even a pillow, so you could do a really quick version to try it out!
Many times 9 different coordinating fabrics are used…I used only 4!
I cut my squares 5 inches. You’ll need 9 (5″) squares for each finished square…
Lay out your squares and play with them till you find a combination you like…then sew them together 1 row at a time…then sew the rows together.
***Accurate cutting and accurate seam allowance is uber important! It’s not hard you just have to pay attention***
When you get them sewn together make certain your square is …square. Trim if needed.
Now…cut down the middle vertically and horizontally …
Rearrange the pattern by moving small squares around and sew them!
This little quilt took 12 (rearranged) squares…
I tied off this quilt as opposed to quilting the layers together, tying off allows the quilt to be a bit fluffier and it’s super quick!…HERE’s a great little video about tying a surgeon’s knot …(Can you see that tiny knot?)
I added a bit of Gigi love…
I’m going to try the Disappearing 9 Patch on a table runner with some vintage fabric…this is such a fun pattern!
