The Husband finished the farm table! He worked slowly, putting a lot of TLC into this project.
This project, which was all his idea. I had nothing to do with it. (I know, I’m just as surprised as you are)
“I want to build a table so the whole family can sit together for Sunday Supper” he told me. And that’s how it started, an expression of love for his family. Everything is for family with this man I married.
We looked online for inspiration and found this table. I loved the trestle.
So after drawing up a patten, he carefully and precisely crafted planks of Ash heartwood into the trestle that would support the heavy table top.
I watched his progress couldn’t help thinking, this is what the Master Carpenter has done with The Husband, lovingly crafted him into a beautiful, strong support.
Although he tried to explain the mortise and tenon method he used to construct the top of the table, the technique was lost on me. But oh how I loved watching him mix the storm-gray stain himself until he got it just right. Like an artist, he brushed stain over the light wood, wiped it off and proceeded to carefully and precisely pass back and forth over the top with sandpaper creating a soft well-worn look.
I see such beauty in furniture that looks like its already experienced decades of life and love. (Makes me wonder… after decades of my own, why I struggle to see beauty in the mirror?)
I would love to give you a DIY tutorial but I’m sorry, it just wasn’t happening on this project. When I started taking photos and getting directions The Husband said this was not a simple DIY, if someone has the tools to do this they would already know how to do it.
You know though, that you can always count on Ana White. She has some great tutorials for farm tables HERE.
I Can’t wait to show you the bench (almost done) and I have a story to tell you about the chairs later this week!
***UPDATE: Want to see the LATEST version of this farmhouse table? The Husband decided he didn’t like the top and sanded it to show the wood grain! Come have a look: HERE
