This little trio of rustic wood signs started in January when I picked my One-Word for 2015…Love.
I used vintage silverware to spell LOVE and made a rustic pallet wood sign for the background. I didn’t sand the pallet wood for that sign because I wanted to remember that love isn’t always smooth. Often times, to love someone, means going through some rough spots.
My HOPE sign was a little different. I started by making the same pallet wood backdrop, but this time, instead of leaving the wood rough, I sanded all rough places and sharp edges and used a teal stain. Because to me, that’s what hope does, soften up the sharp edges of life…also, if hope was a color, (I think) it would be teal…teal makes my heart sing.
My last sign of course, had to be FAITH.
To go along with the easy wood frame, my FAITH sign is made with rustic wood letters. I picked the wood letters on the wood frame because it was a sturdy and strong combination. And our faith, is the strength and foundation of our family.
If you like to do DIY projects, learning to make a couple of wood signs will come in handy. The rustic wood frame I used for my FAITH sign, is the same type of frame I made for my poster prints…
It’s super easy and like I said, if you learn to make one or two frames/signs, you’ll be able to use them to do so many projects around the house!
For this frame you simply cut plywood to the size you want…
Cut 1 x 1? strips (or moldings) to the right length—> I put the long sides on first then tucked the 2 small sides into the space…
Sand over all edges…I like my edges to be smooth and a little bit rounded—that makes the piece look more rustic, like the wood has been around a while.
Now- stain everything. I used Varthane Weathered Gray.

To fix the letters onto my plywood, I used small screws and screwed them in from the back…
I’m really happy with my Faith-Hope-Love signs in the breakfast room, each one different, like the words they represent, but each one works well with the other.
I hope you have a wonderful day my friends~ And if you are looking for more Wood Project inspiration, you might enjoy these projects…
Robin,
I love your signs, and your significance of how/why each was made is such an example of how each word should be viewed. Thank you, with love!
Beautiful signs, beautiful explanations on what each word means to you. They add so much to your room. My favorite sign is the FAITH one. I like the colors and faith has been something I have held on tight to at different times of my life. Hope your day is wonderful too, sweet friend. xxoo
