As some of you know, I’m trying to turn over a new leaf after baking on a few lbs. I’m working on NOT baking and eating fatty, sugary foods and trying to up my exercise which has taken a nose dive in the past two months.
I have had a tough time with WANTING to be in the gym lately. I feel this sense of dread from the moment I step out of bed in the morning. I so wish I could be happy about the gym like these two…
Anyhoo, my blog-bud Brandi said something to me last week that sparked a thought or two. She said she was burned out on her work out routine and was about to make some changes. That’s the secret I think! When your routine stops working … change it!
I’ve done a dozen things to keep up my fitness over the years…When my kids were small I got up before The Husband left for work and ran 3 miles. When they got into high school I went to the gym in the mornings and let them get up on their own. At some point we got a treadmill and I ran at home for awhile.
After I was diagnosed with Osteopenia (the condition right before Osteoporosis), I hired a personal trainer to help me learn how to lift weights. After working with him for six months I went to the gym by myself and continued lifting and cardio.
When that got lonely I joined my friend Ruthie’s gym and started taking group fitness classes. I loved being held accountable by the friends I made in the classes.
Last year The Husband and I changed gyms and I got up early and went with him. This was good too for awhile. But now, with my baking weight going up and my desire to go to the gym going down something’s gotta give…sooooo, I’ve started running again.
A couple of months ago I went over to Stone Mountain Park on a Saturday morning and jogged and walked the five miles around the mountain. It was beautiful. So much to look at and lots of time to think.
Since then, I’ve been back almost every Saturday and I’ve started running in my neighborhood during the week. I actually look forward to sleeping in a little (till about 5:30!) and having coffee and quiet time before I lace up my running shoes and head out the door.
That’s another thing. No packing a gym bag. Just me and my running shoes and my ipod…I love being outside and having time to let my mind go. This will only get more delightful as the Summer eases into Autumn. I’ll get back in the gym with the first cold snap ’cause I dislike running when it’s cold but for now, this is working for me.
Sometimes I take Ollie with me. He loves to go on runs…
but I have the 3 little pups who get really jealous when I go on a run with Ollie…
I’m thinking of getting a set up like this one and having them each take turns … what’d ya think???
I’d love to know what you guys do to keep fit…do you get into a routine and stay in it for years or do you switch it up now and then?
