These easy to make burp cloths are perfect for your favorite soon to be mom. There’s nothing easier to make- really, all you have to do is sew a straight line!
These are easy easy easy! And having a few around to tuck into a baby gift is kinda nice…
All you need:
Cut the flannel a bit bigger than the diaper…
Sew right sides together leaving an opening of about 4 ” to turn burp cloth to right side… trim the seam before turning…
Turn right-side-out and press. Press under the opening while your at it!
Sew around the entire outside of the burp cloth closing the opening as you go…
Sew a top stitch down the 2 edges of the quilted part of the diaper…
I added these to a baby gift for my niece …(Baby Michael David coming soon!) The easy Baby Wipe Case is posted HERE! (See the little yo-yo’s on the wipe case? I sewed them like crazy then hot glued them…obviously this isn’t a ‘toy’ but if a baby accidentally got this and got the yo-yo off, they could choke on these… so be extra careful with anything you add to baby-gear!)
Here’s a couple more I did for Lucy…
I also did a few for smaller ones for my newest granddaughter due in May. Just cut one diaper in half and proceed with the easy directions above!
This size would be really good for a newborn who wasn’t a big-spitter-upper!
These are so cute, Robin! I think I have all the supplies on hand to do this, too. I’ve found you can never have enough burp cloths!
Hi, do you know how much flannel was used per burp cloth ??
Gail…less than 1/4 yard!

Love the fabric that you used – smart to use cloth diapers as the base! It makes a beautiful gift set to include the wipes case too!
I love them. I’m very jealous of anyone who can sew. It’s on my list of things I want to learn. They’re so cute, and I love that you can customize them.
Love these! I have been making mine with just a panel down the middle, but I love how it looks to have one whole side with flannel! I will definitely be trying it this way for my next baby shower. Thanks for sharing! I stumbled your post too!
I just took pictures last night to write up a similar tutorial. I like the flannel across the whole burp cloth, it is really cute.
My kind of project Robin! I have a new grandbaby due in August, so I’ll have to sew up a few! Thanks for sharing!
Hugs! Eileen
Dear Robin~
What a cute idea! We are beyond the baby stage here, but my best friend is due with her third child (first girl!) in July, and I have been looking for some sewing projects to make as a gift. I will use this idea! Thank you for sharing!

You’re right, so simple! Who would have thought? This is such a perfect gift to have on-hand, thanks for the tutorial!
Precious. Just precious~~
these are amazing… you are so stinking creative. it kind of makes me wish i grew up as your granddaughter 🙂
Robin, I am going to make these! I have the perfect baby in mind. Thank you!
Too cute! When my kids were little, umpteen years ago, the big trend was using some fabric paint and sewing some trim on cloth diapers to make cute burp rags. These look much more chic and comfy! Great idea, Robin!
I just love your blog! I love the fabrics you chose for the burp cloths. I’m searching for some neat baby ideas, not only for myself, but for other friends who are also expecting in the next few months. You have such a great style!
This is the first time I’ve seen anyone do their burp cloths exactly how I do mine! These are the best burp cloths. 😀
Monica, it’s really easy isn’t it???? xo
Adorable!!
what brand of diaper do you use??
Nada I got the diapers from Walmart…they only carry one kind I think! xo
This is a great tutorial. I am going to make some for my grandbabies too.
thanks so much for another idea for burp cloths – I made some hourglass cloths although I think your idea is better- but these are for a newbie
Caryn, I think hourglass cloths sound perfect! xo
