It’s time for the Fall Mantle!
I did a super-quick, super-easy, super cheap faux mercury glass project for my mantle the other day.
(It’s a bit different than the technique I tried last Autumn! Faux Mercury Glass HERE)
Just a quick trip to The Dollar Store to pick up some glass candle holders/vases and to Walmart for some spray paint and paint stripper … and waalaa! I’m almost done!
1st~ spray the outside of the glass with paint stripper. Don’t completely coat it…just a spray here and there. The stripper will cause the spray paint not to stick so it kinda gives you the pattern that will give the glass that lovely mercury-glass personality.
2~With a paper towel (and latex gloves on!) dab the stripper. Don’t try to dry it…just very gently dab!
3~Lightly spray the Champagne …then blot with paper towel if you painted too much.
4~Immediately lightly spray the silver and gently blot.
(If the look isn’t what you want just (very lightly) spray a (tiny bit) more stripper on and gently blot until the glass looks like you want it!)
5~Let the glass dry completely.
I tried some without the Champagne using only the silver paint…I liked the results!
When I transition from Autumn to Christmas decorations I’ll use these somewhere! I’m thinking I’ll leave them out in January when I put up my icy Winter decorations!
But for today…I’m drinking in Autumn.
Love to you my friends…it was chilly here in the deep south this past weekend so I’m gonna leave you with my favorite chilly weather wish…
Chilly! I turned my wipers on yesterday morning to get rid of the moisture and heard a scraping sound. This morning it was 38. Ugh! Least you can sit down and wrap yourself into a warm blanket and sip away. Love and hugs robin.
I love the look you got from this, Robin! The silver color looks so nice when the candles are lit. And, they go with every season. It is turner much cooler here this week. This is my favorite time of year, so I am enjoying having it 25 degrees cooler than it has been. I look forward every Fall to “living cozy”. Hugs my friend! :0)
You never cease to amaze and delight me with all the clever ideas you have- and they are so budget friendly! Love seeing how you cozy everything up!
Such a great idea! Beautiful mantel decor…and I LOVE that leaded glass window!
Love them! I think I have everything except the paint stripper. I have 96 votives from my daughter’s so I’ll use some of those. 😉 Thanks for sharing. 🙂
Wow!!! I love this. I want some mercury glass but, it’s just costs to much. I will be trying this technique.

That does it! I have to try this now. I’ve seen it before, but not with the Champagne – which I absolutely adore! Adds that extra dimension. Very clever!
HI Robin!!! First of all THANK YOU so much for your sweet note!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMGoodness, it was waiting for me when I got home from my trip! You are so kind. I LOVE how you did this! Your mantle looks terrific! I guess the glass containers are OK to have a lit candle in them! I was just at the dollar store…..but can always go back:):) Love to you my friend, Pinky
Robin,
Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment. So glad you did. I popped onto your blog for just a minute (baby just woke up from her nap) and I was instantly inspired. Look forward to spending more time here.

Wow o wow! I love this and have been wondering how to do this.
I LOVE this! In the 7th pic from the top, how does part of that one vase look blue? Is it a reflection, or did you use another paint? This is gorg!!
Dawn…that was a mistake! I ran out of candles so I used a blue one left over from summer!!!! xo
These are really cool! I once did something similar with Christmas glass ornaments. Using a disposable bowl, fill with water. Spray the spray paint (metallic color of choice) on top of the water. Then dip and swirl the glass ornament in the water. The paint sticks to the glass. Use rubber gloves too. You can layer 2 different metallic paints on top of the water…it’s really cool!
J~I’m going to try your technique w/ Christmas ornaments! Wonderful!
So I just stumbled upon your blog and decided to try the Mercury glass. It was SO easy and took, literally, less than 20 minutes to do 4 of my vases. I used a plastic grocery bag instead of paper towels and thought they turned out beautifully! I did, however realize that the gloves weren’t to keep hands from getting messy : / And the worst part about that is…my husband owns a paint store!!! Yes, I should have known better. He had a great laugh. I love this blog, thank you!!
Lauren! I’m so happy it worked and the grocery bags are brilliant! Love that idea!!! xo
