I’ve been wanting to try doing some DIY Coasters using napkins! And at this time of year there are so many cute napkins all over…I’m always looking for a great party favor or hostess gift and these DIY coasters would be perfect for either…
Next time you see adorable napkins and think you don’t really need them, remember these coasters! Here’s what ya need:
*Napkins (small ones)
*Matte tiles (got mine at Home Depot for 16 cents each!)
*Mod Podge
*Cork for the bottom (you can use the tiny cork dots or the rolls of cork)
*Polyurethane for sealing the finished product!
The napkin had 4 images when I unfolded it! So you could do a Craft party and tons of people could share a pack of napkins! I use only the top layer of the napkin. I find the thinner the paper, the better it goes on.
Spread Mod Podge on the tile and place the napkin, carefully rubbing over the top.
Now put on a generous coat of Mod Podge…let it dry and put on another coat!
Put cork on the back side. If you’re using the dots just put them in the corners. I used the roll of cork (because I had it!) and I put 4 big blobs of hot glue in the corners and then placed the cork, which is already sticky. The big blobs of hot glue gave the corners a tiny lift and made me feel like it would reeeeaaally stick.
Now just spray 2 coats of Polyurethane over the tops letting dry in between coats!
I took these with some kitchen towels as a hostess gift to Baby Sister on Thanksgiving. They were such fun to make I’m thinking of party favors for my Let’s Do Dessert Party that’s coming up!
What a great idea–these are adorable. Wish I had some modgepodge–I need to get some!

I love this!! Do you mind if I ask what size the tiles where?
Blessings,
Julie
I’m not certain of the measurements but they were the standard size square tiles at Lowe’s or Home Depot. (close to the size of a cocktail or lunch napkin, a little bigger than your palm!!!) Hope that helps
I made tile coasters last year. Stamped. I’ve been tempted to make them like this. Yours are ADORABLE!

Robin, thank you so much for this lovely idea. I am definately making these for our hostess this Sat. evening. I have one question; in the pics it looks as if the edges of the napkin extend over the tile. Did you fold them over to the back of the tile or did you cut them off? Thanks again.
Coasters are wonderful – just think of all the holidays and special days they can be made for.
Question: the polyurethane applied as sealer – is that to actually seal for use or because the ModPodge has a tendency to stay sticky?
Just bought Modge Podge and this is a great project. Your napkins are too cute, also!

I just love reading Modge Podge. I think we’ve set a record for number of sentences with Modge Podge in it. Love that stuff and the project is neat, too!

Great project! Really cute and thanks so much for showing us how you did it. I always thought napkins would be too delicate to decoupage but you proved me sooooo wrong! Thank you!
These are precious! ๐ ~Rhonda

I liked your coasters so much I am going to post the tutorial on my facebook page for friends and family who make holiday gifts. Thanks! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
I LOVE this adorable & creative idea! Thanks for sharing. One question, what do you do with the excess napkin hanging off of the sides of the tile? Could this project be done with photographs?
Aren’t these so fun and easy to make. I just love them.

I love this idea. I tried these the other day and haven’t been able to find the cork. Where did you find the roll of cork? Thanks!

Crystal, I used a roll of cork from Michaels!
Can you tell me.. Is the modge podge then water proof?? I always thought it was like glue and would turn white if wet…
Wendy, I’ve been using these coasters for over a year and they held up fine w/ the Mod Podge, no turning white! But that’s a great question! Not certain if Mod Podge is actually waterproof but the amount of water on my coasters has been minimal. good luck!xo
I love your coasters and I tried them but when I put the modge podge on the top of the napkin, it bubbled and torn when I tried to remove the bubbles. Is this what happened to yours and they simply shrink back when they dry? I love them but have had all kinds of trouble. Any advice?
Thanks, shelley
Shelley, did you separate the layers of the napkin down to just the top layer??? Mine did fine but I’m thinking if you tried to adhere 2 layers onto the tile it might crinkle up?
I was also really careful with the top coat of mod podge, putting it on gingerly. (Did you wait till the napkin was dry from gluing it to the tile originally?)
Hummmm, that’s all I can think of!!
I’m so sorry you had some trouble with them, I’m gonna make some more soon and if I come up with anything else I’ll let you know xo
Robin
Want to try some of these tiles soon – I have some cute summer themed napkins bought for another project.
FYI: I was just working with napkins for another mixed media project & ran across napkins with “3” layers! Didn’t realize there was a 3rd layer of tissue to remove until tried to adhere napkin with modge podge to paper & the top layer kept rolling up off the page. It wasn’t until I realized there was another layer to remove that I could move on. The layer in-between is harder to separate than the first piece.
Linda J, I’ve had 2 layers in a napkin before but never 3!!! You’re so right in that all the layers will need to be separate for the layer with the image to adhere to the tiles! Thanks for the heads-up! xo
