Another week closer to Thanksgiving and the official beginning of the Christmas season. If you’ve planned on making some gifts this is the week to start!( I have more handmade gift ideas under the pull-down menu: All Things Gifts to Make!)
I saw an adorable ruffled scarf on Living With Punks. So I tried one!
I’m all about living cozy right now…and scarves are cozy, so…here’s my take on this cute gift idea!
Here’s what ya need!
* Jersey knit fabric(I love the soft scrumptious feel of jersey knit)
~Mine was 45″ wide~
~Cut two pieces 6″ wide & 55″ long. (This is really up to you! I got 1 1/2 yds of fabric and had plenty left over for another scarf. If your fabric is 60″ like the one on Living with Punks you can buy 1/2 yd of fabric!)
~Cut four 1 1/2″ strips of fabric for the ruffles.
* Matching thread
*Sew 2 of the 1 1/2 ” strips together. *Using a basting stitch, sew 1/4″ from the edge of the strip. *Repeat with remaining 2 fabric strips.
*Lay out 1 of the wide pieces of fabric, right-side up, lay one of your narrow strips right-side down along edge. Gently pull top thread to make fabric strip fit…you’re making your ruffle. Pull and adjust until the ruffle looks the same all the way down. *Pin the ruffle.
* Sew on the ruffle (right-sides together).
*Repeat steps with the other side of the wide piece of fabric.
*lay out your piece with the ruffle and place the other wide fabric piece right-side down on top of it…
*Pin the pieces together and sew around 3 edges, leaving one of the 6″ edges open…
*Using the open 6″ side, turn your scarf right-side-out.
*Iron, making certain to turn under 1/4″ on open side to prepare for sewing the opening shut!
*Sew the opening shut…you can machine sew or use a blind stitch.
I love it! What a simple idea that looks super expensive. Thanks for sharing 🙂
Super pretty! Garment sewing is so not my forte, so I always admire those who know how to sew with apparel fabric. Definitely a beautiful scarf. Happy Fabric Tuesday to you!

LOVE this scarf! I usually don’t wear scarfs, but I am loving them this season. I am definitely going to try this!
Is there a “teach me to sew” pulldown? You actually made that understandable! Not an easy thing. Very pretty. I have a question. How do you cut a straight line. 🙁 That looks like a joke. It isn’t.
Looks Great! I love the jersey knit…and that fabulous color 🙂

I just got the computer fixed in time for all your great ideas! Thank you, once again for the inspiration and your Happy Birthday wishes! You are the best!
I bought a sewing machine two weeks ago (three?), and life and fear have kept it in its box. That and the fact that I’m 50 and haven’t sewn successfully since I was about eight.
This scarf is something I wish to be able to sew someday…

Can you tell me where you got the fabric. It would be a perfect birthday gift for my friend who loves gray.
Hi Martha~ I got the fabric at JoAnns! I emailed you thinking you werre asking about the Live Cozy Pajama Scarf…I got that fleece at JoAnn’s! Also this fabric was there! xo
Robin, your work is amazing thank you so much for sharing, I am so jazzed about making the gray T-shirt and this lovely scarf. Thank you!
Cute, Easy and Beautiful Scarf! Love.
Do you fold the ruffle piece in half before pinning it on long piece so that there are no rough edges? Or do you not worry about the edges?
Janet, with this jersey type material, I didn’t worry at all about the edges! Good luck xo
Janet…I’m sorry, I thought I was replying to a comment on a tee shirt! Still though the answer is the same, you don’t need to worry at all about the edges on the scarf with this kind of material! xo
