Giving someone something, no matter how small, is one way to show love. And my One-Little-Word for 2014 is love after all…
My mama was the most creative person I’ve ever known. She never had a week when she didn’t make something…something she could give away. Every season brought something new from Mama…sea-glass wind chimes, painted flower boxes, handmade paper books full of old family photos…
It was her way of saying: I was thinking about you when I made this…thinking about you because I love you.
A couple of years after she passed away, a big spring storm blew in and when I walked through the side garden to survey the damage, I saw mom’s sea-glass wind chimes in pieces on the ground.
My knee jerk reaction was: “It’s ok…she’ll make me another one” – half second later, reality seeped in…most of those creative things Mom gave me will eventually go away, lost in a move…broken in a storm…and she won’t be making me anything else.
But since then I’ve come to understand that those gifts weren’t simply gifts, they were expressions of her love for me- and love never goes away. Neither will the creative legacy she left behind.
Which is maybe why I’m compelled to create…
It’s what I do… keep making things…little things, that might brighten a day and show someone a little love.
This moss heart flower pot is fantastically easy …wanna have a look?
Here’s What You Need:
*Roll of Moss from your local craft store.***Use your 40%off coupon if this isn’t on sale-
(This moss isn’t real-which makes it ever so much tidier to work with!)
*Terra Cotta flower pot
(You can age your terra cotta pot, it’s easy! HERE is the scoop on how I aged mine!)
*Glue (like Americana Deco- Page)
–
Cut a heart out of the moss & if you’re using the fake stuff, separate the backing from the ‘moss’ top layer…you want the heart to be thin…
This is my aged pot-all dry and ready for my little heart…
Use a thick coat of glue on the back of the heart (and if necessary) on the pot & stick your heart on! You’ll need to rub the moss onto the pot for a few seconds until it starts to adhere…
Add a little succulent (or whatever plant you like) and give a little love…
Everyone shows love in different ways…If you’re not one to make things, how do you express love to people? Do you write notes, give them a call or spend time with them?
Lucy Jean and I are sending love my friends xo
What a gorgeous, gorgeous little girl !!!! Now there’s a gift of love !!!!
Oh Betsy, thank you my friend…I totally agree 🙂 xo
Tender, so tender. Robin, I just love your realness. In my mind, I still see your momma laughing, full of life and carefree. Thanks for sharing her with us. Love you!
Darlene, that’s what I see mama doing too xo (sending love)
How sweet…both Lucy Jean and your moss heart flower pot! I feel the same way about my grandmother. She was always making things for everyone for many years. I now have some of those things. And, some did break when we moved and yes, I was heartbroken. But like you, I realized that her creative legacy lives on. And, I try to keep it going by making things for those I love. xxxooo
Eileen, You’re definitely leaving a creative legacy of your own and I suppose you can thank your dear grandmother for that..sending love ox
As always a great idea. What a beautiful little girl.
Nancy, thank you so much my friend xo
That cannot be Lucy Jean! No! Where did the tiny girl go? She looks so grown- oh my.
You are so intentional in how you show and give love- its very moving and encouraging. I haven’t truly thought of how I do it in other ways. Thank you, friend- for giving me the idea to try to be more intentional in giving love more than one way!
Vicky, one way you love is with your beautiful stories…you have a way with words that makes me feel like I’m right there with you…(and YES! Lucy Jean is 4!!! Soooo big!) sending love ox
