This year, in addition to my (our) goals for the house (which I posted HERE), I’m also making organizing goals every month. It’s easier for me to look at one or two organizing projects a month rather than looking at a long list of 25!
January isn’t even over and I finished my two goals already! During the first week of January I organized my kitchen junk drawers (HERE)
Then last weekend I finished my second goal which was organizing the garage shelf…
Our garage isn’t really a storage area, we have a separate little room off of the garage that serves as storage for paint and gardening supplies. So the garage only has one metal shelving unit (from Costco).
I forgot to snap a photo of the shelf before but here’s a shot of some of the junk I took off the shelf when I was getting ready to organize…
First we had to decide what we would store on this shelf. Since the garage goes right into the kitchen we decided the garage shelf would be a great place to store bulk household items from Costco. Our overflow of light bulbs, bottles of water (readily available to take in the car) and of course the supplies for washing the cars also made the “cut”.
While I was organizing the garage shelf, I gave the entire garage a closer look.
I added these pretty Victorian Stair Treads on the brick stairs going into the house. They are made by Allen & Roth for Lowe’s Home Improvement …I kinda love these babies and I kid you not they catch soooo much dirt on our shoes!
And what about my sweet blue door- do ya like it? I painted it a Behr Paint color Rhino…
As projects go, I started by simply organizing the garage shelf and made my way over to the stairs and the door. In the end, I came up with two more things I want to do in the near future…
The first is to paint the little stair rail white…
And the second thing- I want to find either a Welcome Home stencil or a vinyl to put on the door..wouldn’t that be perfect? (Look at the picture below I photo-shopped the lettering)
When you start one project does it lead to other projects? The Husband calls this going on rabbit-trails, I call it good old fashion common sense. 🙂

And now, I’m trying to decide which organizing projects to put on the list for February…
What area of your life are you planning to organize in the near future?
Sending love my sweet friends
This is kinda sad, I can’t keep those same thibngs on our garage shelves or they would all FREEZE!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was below freezing IN the garge this morning when I left!!!!:(:( We only have one shlf unit in the garage right now til Spring, when we can get rid of some things and get the WHOLE garage organized. So this will be on my MAY list:):) There are SO many areas of this house I am trying to organize. I am about to give up on my closet, it seems hopeless. Just too darn small. LOVE those stair treads and will look for them at Lowes. The door is so pretty and the lettering would be perfect too. XO, Pinky
Pinky, I can’t imagine it being so cold that things in the garage freeze!!!!! I’m freezing right now and it’s only 33*!
Isn’t it amazing when you move, how much space you have to organize??? My closet is on my radar! xoxo
Looks great! I wouldn’t have thought to put the stair treads out there. They look really nice. I bought the door mat today that matches those. They are really pretty. Love that you painted your garage door a pretty color. We use that door most often – so that makes sense to me.
Stacey, I have the door mat too! I’ve had it outside of the front door since May and it looks brand new! xoxo (It does make good sense to have a pretty garage door doesn’t it??? )
There is so wonderful as a well orgainzed space and your garage is looking oh so organized! I love the additon of stair treads to the steps. I’d love to do something similar in my home.
Robin, Check out the stair treads at Lowe’s…you’ll love them and their under 7 dollars! xo
I giggled at the rabbit trail remark. We just redid our living room and boxed up everything that was stored in the built-ins and cabinets. I have heard at least a half dozen times, “all that stuff is not coming back in is it?” Lol!! I like to keep hhim guessing.
Felicia, I can’t tell you how many time my husband has cleaned out a closet or the attic and said “this is NOT coming back in” 🙂 xoxo
You inspired me to clean out my kitchen junk drawer even though it wasn’t too bad…kinda like yours to begin with. It does look better now though and I already had a couple of plastic baskets to use. The stencil is a great idea on your door! 🙂
Gina…Happy about your kitchen drawer…sounds like you are already pretty organized!!! xo
Dare I ask…what’s on your list for February?
XO
Wow, you have accomplished so much! You are going to be finished with your Spring cleaning before Spring gets here 🙂
Love your stair mats. I must say, each time I visit I just smile when I see your pup! (on your header) Such a sweetie!
Blessings,
Cindy
Love the wire shelves and the look. My hubby wants to put the wire shelves behind doors to hide them. He doesn’t like the look. But being on wheels would allow for us to move them out and clean, organize, etc. Thanks!
Putting them on wheels is nice because it makes it easy breezy to clean behind them in our dusty garage 🙂 xo
I love the neat look of your garage. 🙂 Now I am inspired to take before and after pictures of my attempts to clear out clutter.
Bonnie, before and after pics are so helpful aren’t they!!!? xo
I like this wire shelving idea..you can see what you have in stock and what you need to replenish. I have my extra stock inside an enclosed cabinet and “out of sight, also means out of mind.” I found Tide on sale at a fantastic price, limited quanities so I bought 2 each time. Bought it home, went to put it away and found either 3 or 4 in the cabinet. Had that been out in the open, I would have not thought I was out..same with liquid dish soap..When the small bottles of that were on sale bor 97 cents, I bought about 6..handling the larger sizes is beginning to be a problem, due to injured rotator cuff, so when I catch the small sizes at a good sale, I’m going to buy it. Winter will be here before we know it..if you are stocked up, you won’t have to go out in the bitter cold unless you really want to..some stores will allow use of manufacturer coupons too with the smaller size, saving you even more. I love the stair treads on the steps. One of our neighbors has that outside their front door and they said when they feel it has a lot of dirt under it, they lift it up, sweep it or hose it off.. I just bought a book/magazine published by Family Handyman about organizing the garage..Thanks for sharing your ideas and photos on here.
Hi Betty my friend! I love stocking up too! And you must live up north!? We had a bad winter here last year and for the first time I could relate to not wanting to get out of the house!!! (the stair treads really are wonderful!) Have a great evening xo
I forgot to ask how much assembly is required with that wire shelving. Does it come in a box that would fit inside a regular 4 door car? Maybe I could order it online and have it delivered to my home. Now days with my DH’s lack of mobility, that seems to be the best thing for us. I decided since we didn’t shop at Costco very often, we’d not renew our membership. My DH is somewhat handicapped so having it delivered to our house works for us.
Betty, It fit in our SUV…but ordering it online from Costco would be a great idea! There wasn’t much assembly as I remember…I hope this helps my friend ox
Those stair treads are really nice. I wish I had stairs outside… I’m always super motivated in January too. I started this year by putting up wallpaper in my son’s room.
Keri! That sounds like so much fun…I love projects that look great after a lot of effort! (so often organizing isn’t very “pretty” 🙂 ) xo
This is some serious organization!
I needed this. Our garage is a mess. LOL! I’d love for you to share this at our weekly link party. http://www.thelifeofjenniferdawn.com/2016/01/6-amazing-sewing-projects-to-try-today.html Hope to see you there!
Wish mine looked like that! Fantastic. You have motivated me! Thank you for sharing over at The DIY Collective!
