It’s Den DIY Week here in my little corner of the world!
It’s the Den DIY around here this week! So far ~
Monday: Round Coffee Table from a Dinning Room Table
Tuesday: Painting Wood Blinds!
Wednesday: Easy Curtain Panels!
And last week: An Ottoman from an Old Table
Check out all of the Home DIY posts (we’ve been doing a ton this simmer!) HERE!
Painting the den is where this whole Summer DIY started…
Here’s the den before with the stained paneling (wainscoting) and darker walls…
I’ve been wanting to paint the wainscoting in the den for a couple of years but having to paint the heavy crown moldings (dentil moldings) kept me from moving forward.
I posted HERE about The Husband’s remedy for this!
Once that problem was solved I could hardly wait to paint a panel of wainscoting to see the transformation!
Here’s the first panel and first wall I painted…this set off a week of painting 12 to 16 hours a day (the entire downstairs!) not to mention another 4 weeks of project after project after project!
Wainscoting and trim and door color: Behr Ultra-(Paint and Primer in ONE!) Sandstone Cove-Semi Gloss
Wall color: Behr Ultra-(Paint and Primer in ONE!) Castle Path-Satin
I used a little foam roller to paint the wainscoting and the doors and a good (angled) 2″ brush for the trim (moldings)…
***I love the small foam roller for painting table tops too! They put the paint on so smooth!***
The Husband helped a little with painting and his preference is to always use a brush. Either will work!
Painting over anything stained is much more labor intensive than painting over an already painted surface. It is recommended that you lightly sand before your begin painting, but I didn’t do this in the den. My trim, wainscoting and doors had absolutely no shiny coating left on them so I took a deep breath and ignored the rules. It took two good coats of Behr Ultra and it covered like a charm.
Now, if you don’t use Behr Ultra which is paint and primer together, you’ll have to prime first. This doubles your labor and I’ve no idea why anyone would want to do that!
This simple project, painting the wainscoting, trim and doors (and kitchen cabinets, I’ll show you this next week!) has given us the biggest WOW factor of any project we’ve ever done…and people we’ve done a LOT of projects!
While I was at it I asked The Husband to switch out the really big TV cabinet in the den with the smaller computer cabinet in the library room…
It fit better…so I painted, distressed it and added new hardware!
We talked about building cabinets on either side of the fireplace but decided to hold off on that … stay tuned, ya never know when we’re gonna get the urge to build!
Tomorrow I’m gonna show you the After pics of the den! Lightening the color palette has given the house and the den in particular such a peaceful vibe. I kid you not I feel serenity every time I walk into that room…
Oh, and several readers told me I’d need a new sofa after changing my colors…and boy were they were right! Can’t wait to show you!!!
~Have a peaceful~serene kind of day my friends~
Like a breath of fresh air! I have a good friend who has stained trim and doors throughout her home. She wants a new look but refuses to paint the wood. Man, if she could see this, I think it would change her mind.
Did you paint the TV cabinet the custom color you had mixed? I recently painted my brick fireplace surround white and have an antique sideboard that I use to hold the TV. I think it would look great that color. Do you have the paint code?

Autumn ~
I do have the paint code…I’ll post a close-up picture of it tomorrow when I post all the den pics!
Painting the wood really does make a huge difference, I’m slowly working my way up stairs where I’m about to bathe my bedroom furniture in a creamy antique white…
love to you…xo
Looking good! We have the same stained molding, and I am starting room by room to get rid of it. It makes everything so dark. Looking forward to a change, and can’t wait to hear the rest of the story. Jackie

OK I caught the painting fever too! My living room wood paneling WAS so dark it looked like a cave in the daytime!! Mike and I painted all the paneling and the difference is amazing. It is so bright and cheerful now, I can’t stop looking at the room.
Robin’s house looks so pretty and she and Mike are truly an inspiration. Two of the hardest working people I know. They could have their own DIY show.
Take a look at the finished product and see what I mean. Beautiful!!
So pretty! Now I want to paint something too!! It’s so bright and cheerful! 🙂
Wow, this is looking pretty beautiful. I can’t wait to see your after pic. I love white, I don’t really have white furniture or romantic furniture except for a temporary Ikea kitchen hutch (which will be replaced with very ultra-sleek white modern cupboards), most of my house is post-modern, but I love your more romantic style. If I did not have the the Babe, I would probably go that way 🙂
