I’m not sure you guys knew this but I took up a painting project last week. I ahem, I mean, The Husband painted the kitchen Roasted Red Pepper 2 years ago. It was not a fun paint project and he told me something like this; ‘it’ll be snowing in…the Sahara before I paint this room again.’ After about a year that Roasted Red Pepper had worn me out. I love the deep brick red color. But what I discovered is that I love it as an accent. A splash here and there. Not slathered all over the walls. So I decided to paint. I didn’t tell The Husband, until I was committed … right about here: one wall primed, 1 coat. It would take 2 heavy coats of primer to cover that red…
This did not make The Husband happy. He felt certain that I’d start and then hurt my hand and he’d have to finish! I can not imagine what gave him that crazy idea.
Not only did I finish this project all by my lonesome, I did it FAST! Well, for me it was fast…2 1/2 days! My hands have arthritis, my thumb joint in particular which needs to be replaced. But Hallelujah ! My hands held out! Here is the reason I had to finish fast…
I can’t stand a mess, so once it started looking like this:
For the love of pete and all that’s holy, I HAD to get this over with!!!!!
Taaa Daaa! All done! (Do you know what movie is playing???)
I want to put a picture where those metal thingys are…Let me know if you have an idea…
I like the color…it’s Mesa Tan by Sherwin Williams. It’s calmer than the roasted red pepper and I can add some red here and there~
When I tweeted about my painting project I got several tweets from a Behr paint rep. Oh the power of Twitter! He had some good points…maybe I’ll try Behr next paint job! The Sherwin Williams covered great with ONE coat! I was careful applying the coat and refilled my roller and brush more often than usual, but I’m kinda tickled with the paint. It DID however, take 2 good heavy coats of Kilz to completely cover the red. Red is a hard color to paint on a wall. And a hard color to cover! That’s my story and I’m stickin to it.
The movie playing was Sleepless In Seattle . I can not get enough of this movie. I love to watch this one then watch You’ve Got Mail. And if I’m really in the mood for a cherry on top, I throw in Serendipity!
Well, I’m happy with the results and thrilled that I did it all by my little lonesome! It’s fun to do a project right before we start the race towards the Holidays!!!
Are you doing an Autumn project? Do tell!
I’m linking to Metamorphosis Monday at Between Naps on the Porch where there are lots of before and afters! You’ll love looking around this blog party Peeps! Happy Monday~
I love the new color. And I understand about the thumbs. It looks very fresh and “simplified.”
Your kitchen looks great. I painted my kitchen red 4 years ago and have been debating painting it a more neutral and calm color…your kitchen gets me excited to get to painting…not so much about the million coats of paint…but I guess after the 4 to get the red right, I shouldn’t be surprised it could take so many to get “it right” again:)

LOVE it! I am going to be painting our guest bath this week, it has taken me 3 months to pick a color! I am getting our house all ready fro the holidays!

Robin, I love that color especially with the black accents and touches of red. I know about the arthritis, only for me it would be my neck that would suffer. I too usually do the paint in my house, cause hubby never wants to do it. So when he is out of town, I usually tackle a big job like yours. Marla
I love your new paint color, but I liked your red color too! Always nice to have things all fresh and new, great pictures of your project! Have a super day!
It looks great. I have a lot of painting I want to get done but do NOT like to paint.

Hi Robin! Oh you kitchen looks marvelous! My kitchen walls are red and I’m wanting to do just this ~ repaint in a yellowy color. I was wondering how many coats of primer I’d have to use. Thanks for the info.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia 😉

Yes….I like the color very much. The space still feels warm and cozy even without the brick red. Nice job!
The new color is clean and fresh! I am amazed you got the job done in that amount of time. I hate to paint and end up only painting one wall a day because I don’t want to see holidays… that ‘s what I get for being a perfectionist. LOL~ If I got paid by the job, I’d be rich!!
Oh, and I like your window toppers. Did you make them or are they ready-mades?

Man your thumb must be aching lady! I did the same thing a while back!! I had red in one of my living rooms. I loved the contrast of the red with the white woodwork. However after a few years the darkness started to get to me—I mean the red was cozy and seemed to embrace me….but I don’t have the best daylight in my home. So I decided to lighten it up. I also chose a yellowish color–the couchs in this room have camel yellowy colors and some rust and redish colors in them so both colors worked in the room. It was a hard decision to make, but I do like the lift the lighter color gives me. I think I might have had to prime twice toooooooo!

Everything turned out GREAT! What a woman! I especially LOVE that you showed your kitchen in the midst of everything! You have no idea what that means to me! (I thought I was the only one who worked like that!) You might be my brand new BFF!

Oh how I love it! It just feels so soothing. Gives a peaceful easy feeling and blends with the den. Hope your hands recover quickly.
So glad you finished your painting project. I’m still working on mine! But we’re painting every room except the kitchen in our new two story house. YIKES! What a job! We’re using that Behr paint with the primer already in it. Let me just say….it’s amazing! Covers in one coat with no primer coat. I’m all about less work. Your kitchen looks great. Love the new color. Blessings, SusanD

Looks Great!!!! Have a Blessed Monday…..
Wow – you did an awesome job painting the kitchen. I don’t think I would have been brave enough to tackle that one. I love the color you chose. Beautiful! I also love your window treatments. I was thinking about something similar in my kitchen and after seeing it in yours, I really like the black check. Thanks for sharing!

Nice work Robin! We had to use a special grey primer for covering red, then one coat is all it took. The grey in the primer just seems to neutralize the pigment in the red and makes it easy to cover with any color afterwards. Nice pumpkin shot in the header, it sure feels like fall. We’ve heard the mention of snow for next week!

I have this daughter with great taste!!! Actually all of The Daughter’s have great taste. But, thank you Stephie Roo for the paint color! 🙂 Now, let’s talk about your dinning room color!!!
Your new paint job is beautiful! What a good color choice! It’s perfect with your kitchen cabinets.

Beautiful job! Love the new color! I hear you on the mess business, LOL. It’s a good motivator to keep on going! I painted my home office a deep burgandy color over 10 years ago and still love it today. But the room is very broken up with a double french door, one single door, a double window, a single window, and two built-in bookcases. So it ends up being more of an accent color by default!

Very nice! That might be a good color for our living room. I like a neutral backdrop color on the walls. But, I like that it’s not white. Then you can change it up throughout the year with different accents and colors. Great job.
Forgot to leave a comment yesterday! The kitchen looks great. you did a terrific job! And kudos for doing it all yourself! I loved the old color but this one is nice and calming. My kitchen used to be wallpapered and I couldn’t believe how differnt I FELT in there when I painted it a nice soothing sage green! Hugs, Pinky
Pinky…I love sage green! Have you put up pics yet on the HGTV site? I’d love to see your space woman! xoxoxo
I love the new color! I’m right there with you on having a mess to do the project and just wanting it DONE. LOL The red was beautiful, but I imagine it IS very hard to cover up with new paint. It looks lovely.

Beautiful!! I just love the paint job. Now red is my favorite color but I’m not sure I could have taken it all over the walls…although it looked very pretty, I love the new color. Great job! And KUDOS for doing it without hubby 🙂
Blessings!

Hi Robin,
Love the new color!! I know what you mean about the dark colors. I painted my kitchen a beautiful Tuscany type dark orange. It was gorgeous, but I tired of it pretty quickly. They replace thumbs joints? I didn’t know that. I’ve got arthritis in my hands, too. Great job on the kitchen!!

Great job! Love the color and how cozy it looks.
Totally get the movies. I sometimes throw While You Were Sleeping at the end.
Have a great day!
Love the new color. Love the movie choices too! Add to that list another of my favorites “While You Were Sleeping” and you’ve got a great movie marathon!
AMAZING!!!
I loved the red, but now I love the gold. Your accent pieces are shown off more and the kitchen looks much bigger…..great job. I too have the thumb problem, years of use and wrapping flowers, my thumbs don’t work well anymore. Old Age!!!!!
Robin your kitchen is just gorgeous! Oh my I adore the paint color. ~Lovely!
You look so pretty at the fair! You must have succeeded at your WW because your look truly FAB! I’m still plugging along on the weight loss slowly but I feel fantastic! I’m grateful for that.
How do I follow your blog? I can’t tell what I’m doing with it and I don’t want to miss a thing.

I just did the SAME thing last week! Our kitchen has been a ColorPlace color called Red Hot for a couple years, and it had depressed me to be in our kitchen ever since. I told my husband that I wanted to prime and paint it the same Hazelnut Creme as the rest of our house, and he looked panic-stricken thinking, like your husband, that I’d get injured and not be able to finish. (I should mention that he had done four coats of the Red Hot, and was not looking forward to having to re-paint!) Long story short, I did it all myself (five months pregnant — shh, don’t tell anyone!) and it looks great! We’re thrilled with our kitchen, and I love being in it now.
Oh, you and I are kindred spirits in more ways than one — “Sleepless in Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail” are two of my all time favorites!!
LOVE your blog!
Lisa

Lisa! Wow!!! SO nice to meet you, we truly are kindred spirits and it sounds like our husbands may be K. S. too!!! Coming right over to see you at your blog-home!xoxoxo
love the way the kitchen turned out! and those are three movies that i can watch over and over again. don’t you agree that with the right movie or music in the background, the painting is a bit more pleasant!
About a week ago I had a wild hair up my behind and painted my kitchen Buttercup yellow it really brightened up the kitchen which lacks windows and natural light… Plus it made my moode much more happy… I called the room the happy room… ha ha
