“Humble yourselves…” 1 Peter 5:6
I’ve always thought of humility as something that grew inside a person over time. Something over which I had little control. My idea was that there are some people who are born humble, I love those people. I’m not one of them. Then there are those who acquire humility over time, after “life” beats the pride and arrogance right out them!
But the verse in 1 Peter it seemed to suggest I could do something to practice humility. How Father, can I humble myself?
The notes in my Bible pointed me to Luke 14:11. That’s the story about being invited to a wedding feast and when you get there taking the best seat. Jesus encourages his listeners instead to take the “lowest place” leaving the seats of honor to others.
Hummm, so giving preference to others is a way to practice humility. My mind is racing with ways I can practice humility today…
*Letting someone in front of me in line or in traffic.
*Smiling when the cashier is rude. (This happened last week and I’m sorry to say, smiling is not what I did.)
*Really listening to someone who’s beliefs are different from mine. (moral, political or religious)
*Being careful not to bring attention to myself in conversation.
This is exciting to me because it gives me something practical I can do! When I have thoughts like:
“why should I?”
I can answer myself…
“because I’m practicing humility…”
Are there other ways you can think of that will help me practice humility?
Love to you my friends…
PS…the photo is of our rescue Ollie because he’s one of the most humble beings I’ve ever met. xo
