A few months ago friends at Lamps.com contacted me about being in their 2014 DIY Lamp Shade Contest!
How fun right? Decorating a drum shade! At the time, although it was still chilly outside, I was brainstorming some ideas for summer and sea glass kept catching my eye! I love the soft washed colors of sea glass…with that in mind, here’s my Sea Glass Inspired Lampshade!
Before I tell you how easy this is to make…if you have an extra 15 seconds….would you go HERE & vote for me!? (oh thank you!:) )
I love the way this turned out! It’s perfect for adding a bit of summer to a space and the washed colors create a dreamy glow as the sun goes down…but more importantly, it’s easy-breezy to make!
Here’s what you do!(obviously, I’m not an artist…so forgive me if you are 🙂 This is just what worked for me!)
1-First, use really thin, really cheap cotton fabric and tape it over a plastic covered canvas (any surface will do, just make sure it’s covered in plastic wrap!)
2-Water down acrylic craft paint (you could use watercolor paint if you have some)–I just put dots of paint on a paper plate and poured water onto the plate – then picking up a little watered down paint with the brush…wash over the fabric. If it’s too dark, simply dip your brush in clean water and water down the fabric! (You really can’t go wrong with this…just add more color if it’s too washed out or add more water if it’s too dark…)
3- Continue layering the colors & adding water …
4- Your fabric will be super wet when you’re done! That’s ok…just let it dry then iron it on a low setting!
When your fabric is dry & ironed…
1-Lay your shade over craft paper and roll the paper to cover the shade-pencil in lines & cut out a template.
2-Using the template cut your fabric.
3-Use (small amounts of) hot glue to secure the fabric to the shade.
Wrap the fabric all the way around your shade …and:
1-Turn the edge under and hot glue to secure.
2-Trim the top and bottom of your fabric so there is just a bit of fabric to fold over. (too much will look messy)
3-Hot glue Double-Fold-Bias Tape to the edge to hold the fabric and finish off the edges.
Would you head over to Lamps.com and have a look at all the lampshade entries? And while you’re there, if you wouldn’t mind…would you vote for me!!!? Ohhh, and 1 more thing!
If I happen to win, the fine folks at Lamps.com will give away a $100.00 gift certificate to one of my sweet friends right here!
Sending love my friends ~ xo
