Spring’s coming. You know because temperatures warm a bit, the birds sing loud in early morning and, the garden sprouts soft greens. It’s then that I want the inside of our home to reflect the beauty that’s taking place outdoors.
Although I change things up a bit from season to season and even from year to year, one thing stays consistent, I’m inspired by the colors and textures of nature. This year, I decided to start my spring nesting by putting together a spring dough bowl for our farm table.
This little arrangement doesn’t have any bright spring colors, mostly it’s different shades of green.
In past years I’ve added pastel colors and fresh flowers to my spring dough bowl. But this year I decided I wanted a brand new arrangement …
So I hit up Hobby Lobby and Michael’s to hunt and gather. I knew I wanted my spring dough bowl to be inspired by nature, in particular I wanted forest-type elements…
*** While I bought all new elements, this dough bowl can be a 4 season dough bowl with just a little tweaking. With that in mind, I didn’t mind spending money on new things. Keep reading until the end of the post to hear what I’ll do to get the biggest bang for my buck with this dough bowl ***
As with any of my dough bowl compositions, I start by adding plastic bags to the dough bowl. This makes it possible to add less to the bowl and still have a full arrangement.
To cover the bags I added a layer of sheet moss, tucking it in around the edges…
Next I added some of these sweet little wispy ferns…
While I like the sheet moss for “ground cover”, I love these squares of faux moss from Michael’s. They have a different color and they’re textured. Best of all, since they aren’t real moss, they don’t shed!
And the loop of bark ribbon added some height and a pop of soft brown…
Concrete pots with dusty green plants and pieces of birch limbs add lighter colors to the piece…
This adorable weathered pitcher is the only element that deviates from all the other colors. But I love it!
Lastly I added just a bit of Spanish moss. It works because it’s the same color as the concrete pots…
As an afterthought I unrolled this whimsical mossy garland and let the loops fall where they may.
Whenever I look at this little beauty I feel the hope of new life and the wonder of spring.
*** The way I’ll make this arrangement a 4 season arrangement***
*For Easter, I’ll add a few pretty eggs and a small bunny.
*For summer, I’ll incorporate some whimsical fairy garden elements.
*For autumn, I’ll make room for some small pumpkins and gourds in subdued colors.
*For Christmas I’ll incorporate some champaign and minty green glass ornaments and maybe loop some coordinating ribbon throughout.
By making this a 4 season arrangement, the initial cost for supplies isn’t significant.
Happy spring my friends xo
