Have you guys heard of Behr Deckover?
Let me tell you about it! You guys know I’m a long time Behr Paint fan…I mean the paint even has it’s on category own my blog: All Things Behr Premium Paint with Primer! I use Behr Paint for the walls, the trim, painting furniture, the porch floor, craft projects…and now my back deck! When we started the backyard project we discussed tearing down our back deck, it’s old and looked awful. But after doing a little research and talking to my friends at Behr Paint I thought we should give Behr DeckOver a try!
The good people at Behr Paint sent me Behr Premium DeckOver in Slate Gray…
Our back deck was in terrible shape …
First we pressure washed the wood…
After it was completely dry we applied 2 good coats of Deckover. It’s nothing like paint or stain, it’s super thick and feels like your coating and protecting the wood…
Behr describes deckover this way: “BEHR DECKOVER Solid Color Coating is an innovative makeover solution for your old, weathered wood or concrete. With just two coats and no primer needed, BEHR DECKOVER repairs weathered or cracked horizontal and vertical wood, composite and concrete surfaces. The result for sound wood and concrete surfaces is a rejuvenated, low maintenance deck that resists the elements, repels water and creates a smooth, slip-resistant finish that is comfortable for bare feet.”
Can you see why we decided to use deckover?
We painted the rails too…
I’m not kidding guys…it’s like night and day. The deck looks amazing!
I love the gray, it pulls out the gray color in some of the pavers…
And looks really nice from the inside of the house looking out-because if you can see your deck from inside your house, it’s part of your decor and it needs to look pretty!
We did a whole lot in the backyard and this was one of my favorite things because it was so easy! If you have a deck that’s in disrepair, try Behr Premium Deckover before you consider replacing it!
(The product was given to me by Behr but the opinions are my own…and The Husband’s and everyone who’s seen it! 🙂 )
Looks awesome. I’m a huge Behr fan myself!
Julia, me tooo! xo
Looks amaaaaaazing! It’s a must-do, for sure!
Julie, they have tons of colors, you could find the perfect combination for the log cabin! ox
Your deck looks so nice and ours desperately needs the same thing done again.
Kim, thank you friend! xo
I am not familiar with Deck Over. You said your deck was in terrible shape and I am curious as to what this product does for old wood? It looks great but does it somehow repair or strengthen bad wood?
Judy, it fills in small cracks (up to 1/4″) and covers wood, sealing it in a thick slip resistant covering. I was so surprised at how thick it was and how well it covered the wood! Much more than paint or stain!
It looks so nice, Robin! Both our back deck and our front deck need painting. It seems the sun and very hot weather really wears the stain down fast. I’ll definitely be looking into this!
Eileen, you’ll love it! It’s so much more than a paint…it fills in small cracks and coats the wood! Let me know when you do yours! ox
It may not be until spring as our temperatures are dropping! 🙂
Behr is a great product, used it in all the rooms of my home and is so worth the bit more in price. Will try the Behr Deck Over…
Brenda, you sound like me! We’re both big fans of Behr paint! ox
Robin – it looks beautiful! Love it!
I wonder how this would look on our concrete patio? I can’t believe how well it transformed your deck! I will have to show this to Rick and see what he thinks. We at least can do our wooden steps down onto the patio and spruce them up! Did they have it in other colors as well? Thanks Robin!
Vicky, I looked up the info and it works great on concrete! Also just got a comment from a friend who’s used it on concrete and she said it did a great job! Let me know if you guys decide to give it a try! ox
We. used this product on our concrete patio this summer. It did a super job.
Teresa, I forgot about concrete! So glad to hear it worked well for you ox
Looks great!! We’ve been thinking about doing this on our deck…nice to hear from someone who actually has used this product. I’m curious if the coverage is indeed what the can indicates.
Leslie, let me know if you give it a try! I think you’ll love it!
Looks fantastic! That’s our first project next spring. Our deck looks like yours used to look….can’t wait! We were going to do that this fall, but ran out of time and warm weather. Thanks for the pics! 😉
Donnamae, you’re going to love it! xo
That looks so great … I love the color!
Randi, thank you friend! I love the gray too! ox
Wow! now that is a beautiful makeover! Looks like a fabulous product!
Robin
I am SO GLAD to see you used Behr DeckOver and showed us how it turned out. I discovered this Behr product last summer at Home Depot and fell in love with what the brochure and sample pieces looked like in the store. I am huge Behr fan too!
NOW the problem is getting my husband to pressure wash our front porch so I can do it! How long did you give your deck to dry from the pressure washing before you painted it?
Janice
Hi Janice my fellow Behr Paint lover!
We let the deck dry 2 days but honestly I think it was dry after the first day! Let me know when you guys do this project! xo
Thanks for the info Robin! I hope I can get my hubby to pressure wash the porch one pretty Saturday soon. I am dying to try it.
Our house is grey vinyl siding with dark red/burgundy shutters and same red/burgundy metal roof & house has white trim; if you can visualize this do you think a dark red burgundy porch floor color would look good or would plain white look better?
I have the hardest time trying to decide and I value your opinion!
Thanks in advance
Janice
WOW Robin this looks amazing and you are right the grey was perfect!
Thank you Kelley! I like the grey too!xo
Looks faboo! We used the same color on ours but painted the railings black. It’s a different look but I love it.
Lori, that sounds great! I didn’t think to use two colors!!! I love it! ox
Does anyone know how it weathers over winter with lots of snow on it? Have old decks in Teton Valley, ID where lots of snow and cold temps. Also, on concrete – does it fill in cracks on a concrete patio – same with cold and snow? Thanks for any input.
Lulu, I’ll check with my friends at Behr and let you know! Have a wonderful evening my friend xo
Lulu…I checked with my friends at Behr and here’s what they told me:
“Our DeckOver product is designed to be a durable coating which creates a smooth, slip-resistant finish that also resists cracking & peeling. It has been tested for harsher environments that include snow + freezing, and will hold up well. For best results, we advise
following all the label instructions for preparation and application. Let us know if you need anything else! Thank you!”
So it sounds like if you’re careful to follow the prep and application instructions you’d be just fine all winter long! xo I hope that helps friend!
Hi Robin…
Just looking for an update on how the deck over is now since applying it?
I jus bought a gallon today (had it tinted “coffee” ). I’ll be trying it out on my front entry deck to start. If it turns out nice, it will be going on my (rather large) back deck as well. What Ki d of traffic does your deck have on it regularly? I’m putting the smooth finish in mine. I’ll put the heavier textured stuff on the back deck (to hopefully stand up to dog traffic!!)
Thanks!
Kellie
Kellie, the deck looks great! We are out there to use the grill and in spring and fall we eat out there…I also have lots of flowers and my potting bench on the deck so I’m out there every day- but it’s not what I’d call a high traffic area. With that said, so far the deck and rails look fantastic and I’d do it again 🙂 Hope that helps my friend xo
I’m curious to see if someone has done it and how well it stays on after time. We can have pretty harsh winters and just wondered how well it weathers.
Marilyn, we had a rough winter last year and ours still looks fantastic! But we live in the deep south! I know though, that Behr has developed this product to be used in every climate…if you try it, I think you’ll be happy! ox
It looks beautiful. I’m tired of staining or sealing our large deck because it just doesn’t seem to last even one season no matter what I use. Do you know how often you would have to reapply this product? How long it lasts?
Hi Debbie, I sooo understand getting tired of redoing the stain on your deck! Here is the answer from Behr Paint:
If the DECKOVER coating is applied according to label directions to a properly prepared, sound wood or concrete substrate, the film can be expected to last as long as a high quality Solid Color Wood Stain. BEHR Solid Color Wood Stains last 5 to 10 years on horizontal surfaces and 15 to 25 years on vertical surfaces
I hope this helps my friend xo
Hi, love this. I’m trying to DIY my concrete patio that was painted and chipping. We’re trying to strip it but it’s taking forever and I’m thinking of just painting over it. Did you have to strip anything on your deck first? We’ve been using Behr paint stripper but it’s not that great. Tell me if you stripped it or just power washed it first!
Thank you!
Christine
Christine, we just pressure washed it! Good luck! ox
Robin, we were considering replacing our deck this fall, until I just came across this post. I have a couple of questions if you don’t mind, now that it’s been almost 2 years since you put the deckover on. One, how has it held up, have you had to touch it up or redo it yet since? Two, do you think this is something that could be sprayed on, or must be painted on? Three, I have large dogs that tend to scratch up the horizontal decking that they walk and run around on, do you think this would hold up better than just seal and stain? Four, if I replaced a few of the boards that are warped or heavily cracked, once I deckover, would you be able to tell the new boards from the old boards in color?Lastly, I have a fairly high-level raised deck and the lower parts are all lattice do you think that I could find deckover that would match another color in Behr stain so that I could just spray stain the lower portions? Sorry for all the questions, but this could be a great fix that could get us a bit more life for the deck. Feel free to email if you like. Thanks!!!
Teri… our deck is doing great after 2 years! There is one area of one board that is peeling but we’re sure we somehow didn’t get that small (about 5×6 inches ) area completely clean. As far as the dogs, we have small pups so I’m not sure about that but I am sure the deck over would hold up better than stain.
There are lots of colors of deck over and I would just try to find a coordinating stain. I think the Home Depot paint team members could help you with that as I’m sure lots of people have that issue!
The decision to replace or refurbish a deck is a hard one…ours is still sound as far as the construction is concerned so we felt comfortable using Deck Over to help us get some more years out of it! But, exposed wood doesn’t last forever and I imagine in the next 5 years, we’ll choose to replace ours. Good luck my friend ~ xo
