It’s officially the Christmas Season! Have you started decorating your halls yet? I am asking because I can help you with these DIY jar ornaments for Christmas that you can complete in 5 minutes. I’m working on our decorating and have been thinking a lot about my years of being on a tight budget and making many of my Christmas decorations. I still love to make decorations like pinecone crafts, wreaths, lanterns, and hanging lights. And all the better if they’re quick and easy. With that in mind, I’ve been doing some 5 5-minute ornaments, and here’s the latest, a tiny jar Christmas ornament…

Why Is DIY Jar Ornament So Special?

I love to make glass jar ornaments because the things we put inside can be changed as a new festival, season, or event comes. For this, we don't always need to make new ones; thus, we can pay attention to other crafts. For example, when spring comes, I can make a fairy garden inside, putting all things out.

Similarly, I can change them to a fake terrarium my child will love.

Another reason is that the DIY jar ornaments are not only for hanging; they can also be placed over as table decoration.

Supplies For DIY Glass Jar Ornament For Christmas

A few from the garden, some from the kitchen, and some from the market; the following are the supplies needed to make glass jar ornaments at home:

Save

  • Spice Jars (Mainly We Need their Lids)
  • Small Glass Jars
  • Acrylic Paint (Choose one that is labeled as multisurface. This kind of paint dries fast and have self-sealing)
  • Stickers (I used raised, 3D type stickers of snowman, owl, and fox)
  • Red and White Twine (because this is Christmas)
  • Little things to add that go with/ your theme of each ornament (Use something you have around the house or out in the yard)

How to Make Holes In Lids?

If you don't have jar lids with holes, have a smaller and larger screwdriver and hammer to make yourself (not drill). For this,

  • Take a jar covered by a lid, and place a small, sharp screwdriver on the side of the surface. Then hammer a bit until the screw enters the lid.
  • Take the small driver out and place the larger one on the mini hole, again using a hammer to push it in. Rotate the screw, and your hole is ready.
  • But on the other side of the hole, there will be small metal attachments; hammer them down or remove them with a piler.

If you have spice jars like mine (with holes in the top), turn the lid to open ½ of a large hole (like the red lid below) This will be perfect for your string.

How to DIY Jar Ornament For Christmas?

In this section, I shall explain how to make the glass jar Christmas ornament. Let's get started!

Step 1: Paint the Jar Lids

Use a paint that will stick better with the plain surface of the lid. Otherwise, you can apply a thin coat of primer first and then final paint. I used multi-surface acrylic in red and blue colors which doesn't need any primer. Here is how to paint the lids.

  • Wash the Lids and dry better before applying the paint.
  • First, apply one thin coat; after the first is dried, apply a second coat and keep it for drawing.

Step 3: Add things to Jar

While the jar lids are drying, you can prepare a setting inside the jars. I made two different settings or scenes for two different sticker creatures as follows:

For Penguin Environment

Additional Items Needed: You will need fake snow and tiny white pom poms as snowballs for the penguin stickers!

I didn’t glue anything; I just tucked the things inside…

First, the snow and pompoms and then two stickers of penguins.

For Woodland Environment

Additional Materials: For my woodland creatures stickers, I used reindeer moss, twigs, and tiny pinecones.

Set everything inside the jar and then insert the woodland stickers as below:

In a similar way, I created a great environment in the kid's terrarium tutorial.

Last Step: Hang the Jars

To hang your ornament, double knot the string and thread it through the ½ open hole in the lid. For other types of jars, adjust the way you add your string. (for instance, if you use a mason jar type jar with no holes in the top, punch a hole in the center of the top for your string!)

This is a project your kids can do! And if you use things around the house, it’s cheap too!

If your Little’s help, add the date to the bottom of the ornament…

I really wish I’d gotten more spice jars because these tiny ornaments look so cute on the tree…
